OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN: GET WELL SOON, CHRISTINA APPLEGATE Blog

Olivia Newton-John, a breast-cancer survivor who feels "an instant rapport" with others who have the disease, says she is thinking of Christina Applegate and planning to connect with the Samantha Who? star during her time of recovery.
"I haven't met her yet, but I've always liked her and admired her as an actress and would like to just say 'Hey,' so I will," Newton-John told PEOPLE at Project Angel Food's Angel Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Breast-cancer survivors form a kind of sisterhood, says Newton-John, 59, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1992. Asked how her battle and recovery have helped her connect with strangers who have the disease, she replied, "We're not strangers, and particularly if you've been through something like this. I feel connected.
"You understand where they've been. There's that compassion, that connection with someone. So, I feel very lucky that I'm here. I feel lucky that I can pass on the message that I am here."Applegate, 36, was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer this month and elected to undergo a double mastectomy, even though cancer was detected in only one breast. She has been declared cancer-free and is now recovering.
Newton-John is currently juggling several breast-cancer initiatives, including a project by Curves gyms to give away 1 million breast self-examination kits during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. She is also building the Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Center in Australia.
Project Angel Food, another charity she in involved with, provides daily meals in L.A. for people homebound or disabled by HIV/AIDS and other illnesses.

LANCE BASS: CHRISTINA APPLEGATE 'FULLY RECOVERING' Blog

Christina Applegate coped with her double-mastectomy recovery in the hospital by doing crossword puzzles and crafts – and getting an outpouring of love from friends.
"I was at the hospital holding her hand and getting her through it," longtime friend Lance Bass tells PEOPLE. "She is a very, very loved person."
Less than a week after revealing she had the surgery, the Samantha Who? star, 36, is "doing great," says Bass. "She's totally, fully recovering."While in the hospital, Applegate was able to distract herself.
"She's a big crossword puzzle girl. That kept her busy," says Bass, 29. "In her hours of recovery, she's made all these roses out of lace. She has hundreds and hundreds of these amazing different roses. She doesn't know what she's going to do with them."
Sharing her story was an easy decision for her, according to Bass.
"Now she has a voice and she can use it for something good," he says. "Just opening her mouth about it is going to make thousands of women go get checked out. It will probably save many lives."

French actor Jean Reno is in intensive care in the Caribbean after suffering a heart attack Wednesday.
Reno, and his wife, Zofia, arrived in St. Bart's on Tuesday where they were house-guests of French rocker Johnny Hallyday and his wife, according to French news agency LCI. Sources tell PEOPLE that the actor had a heart attack Wednesday, and doctors on the island decided to immediately transport Reno to the intensive care facilities at CHU Fort-au-France on the island of Martinique.
After an urgent medi-evac flight, the 60-year-old is in the hospital's Cardiac Services Unit. Reporting his present condition as unknown, the Agence France-Press quote sources saying the actor suffered "a very serious heart attack." CHRISTINA APPLEGATE: DOUBLE MASTECTOMY A "TOUGH CHOICE" Blog

Christina Applegate, who chose to have both of her breasts removed after one was found to contain cancerous lumps, will undergo breast reconstruction surgery over the next eight months.
"I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything," she told Good Morning America in an interview that aired Tuesday.
"I just wanted to kind of get rid of this whole thing for me," she said of the prophylactic double mastectomy. "This was the choice that I made and it was a tough one.
"My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy," she explained.
Applegate, the 36-year-old star of Samantha Who?, is now "absolutely 100 percent clear and clean" of cancer and planning reconstructive surgery.
"I'm going to have cute boobs 'til I'm 90, so there's that," she joked. "I'll have the best boobs in the nursing home. I'll be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table."
The decision was an emotional one.
"Sometimes, you know, I cry," she said. "And sometimes I scream. And I get really angry. And I get really upset, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think that it's all part of the healing."
Applegate said she gained insight into the disease from her mom, Nancy Priddy, a repeat breast cancer survivor.
"She's been sort of this quiet warrior in the back and has been a great support, and just telling me that I was going to be OK," she said. "And I knew I was going to be OK. I've watched her.
"I've watched her have a mastectomy, and then I've watched her go through two years of chemotherapy and eight surgeries and a hysterectomy," Applegate added. "I've watched this woman survive both those things. So, for me, there was always that sense that I was going to be OK, no matter what."
The actress' cancer was discovered earlier this year during a follow-up exam.
"If this had been caught a year from now, or when I was 40, I probably wouldn't be able to live through this," Applegate said.

CHRISTINA APPLEGATE CANCER-FREE AFTER DOUBLE MASTECTOMY Blog

Christina Applegate, who was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer this month, revealed on ABC's Good Morning America Tuesday that she has undergone a double mastectomy – even though cancer was only detected in one of her breasts.
Privately, she admits, "Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I scream, and I get really angry and I get really into wallowing in self-pity sometimes, and I think it’s all part of healing."
Having watched her mother, Nancy Priddy, battle breast cancer – and then suffer from a recurrence many years later – the Emmy-nominated star of Samantha Who?, 36, told interviewer Robin Roberts that she wasn't taking any chances, especially since she has the breast cancer gene, BRCA1."My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy," said Applegate. "So basically I had a prophylactic double mastectomies."
Explaining her rationale in taking that dramatic step, she said, "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one."
The surgery took place three weeks ago. She did not undergo radiation or chemotherapy.
Applegate, whose initial reaction when she received her diagnosis, was. "Oh my god. I was so pissed off, so mad … I was just shaking." But then, she said, "Immediately I had to go into take-care-of-business mode."
Plans for Reconstructive SurgeryAsked her prognosis, Applegate told Roberts, also a cancer survivor, "I'm clear. Absolutely 100-percent clear and clean."
Over the next eight months she will undergo reconstructive surgery. I'm gonna have cute boobs till I'm 90," she quipped, as Roberts pointed out how Applegate's sense of humor has helped the actress endure the ordeal.
Applegate also cited her 67-year-old mother, whom she described as "a quiet warrior."
"I watched her have a mastectomy, and then I watched her go through two years of chemotherapy and eight surgeries and a hysterectomy," said Applegate. "I've watched this woman survive both of those things, so for me there was always that sense that I was going to be okay, no matter what."
Early Detection Was KeyApplegate, who began getting mammograms at the age of 30 because of her family's medical history, said the cancer was detected through an MRI ordered by her doctor as a follow-up to a biopsy she had last year.
“Besides me being really vigilant about it [mammograms and self-examinations], it is the No.-1 reason I am going to live."
Having become familiar to TV audiences in her role as sassy teen Kelly Bundy on Married ... With Children, Applegate said she plans to return to the set of ABC's Samantha Who? when filming resumes in September.
She is also set to appear in the all-star TV special Stand Up to Cancer, airing Sept. 5 on ABC, CBS and NBC and raising funds for cancer research. Applegate also noted she plans to raise money for MRIs and gene testing.

Christina Applegate is free of breast cancer.
"I'm clear," Applegate, 36, tells ABC News' Good Morning America in an interview airing Tuesday. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."
Earlier this month, the Samantha Who? star announced she was battling an early form of breast cancer.
"I was so mad," Applegate reveals to Good Morning America. "I was just shaking and - and then also immediately, I had to go into... 'take-care-of-business-mode,' which was ... I asked them, 'What do I do now? What - what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?"'
When told of her diagnosis, Applegate says she, "immediately made those appointments and immediately called around for ... someone to start teaching me how to live macrobiotically."
With a family history of the disease (mom Priddy had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery when Applegate was 7-years-old and later underwent a hysterectomy), the former Married with Children star says, she began getting mammograms at the ago of 30.

SUZANNE SOMERS TO CHRISTINA APPLEGATE: USE CANCER TO LEARN AND GROW Blog

After announcing earlier this month she'd been diagnosed with breast cancer, Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate is receiving words of support and encouragement from fellow TV star Suzanne Somers, herself a breast cancer survivor.
Somers, 61, who announced in 2001 that she was battling the disease, has written an open letter to Applegate, 36, and which has been made exclusively available to PEOPLE:
Dear Christina, Cancer is scary, and lonely. You can't ask anyone to make decisions for you because it's just too heavy. There is a lot of 'rush to treatment,' when what you really need is time to research and think about how you want to approach this. Take your time Christina, there is no rush. Take your time and think it through. Use your cancer to learn and grow and as a force to work for you. You might choose to take an alternative approach. There are more options than the ones presented to you in the oncologist's office. You will make it. The success and drive you have had in your career will be the same strengths you will use to win over this nasty disease. And I am here if you want to talk to someone who was 'there.'Sincerely,Suzanne SomersRELATED ARTICLES: • In 2001, Suzanne Somers sparked controversy by battling breast cancer without chemotherapy on the “cover

COVER STORY: INSIDE CHRISTINA APPLEGATE'S BRAVE BATTLE Blog

While Christina Applegate's announcement that she's battling an early form of breast cancer shocked her legions of fans, insiders tell Us Weekly in its latest issue, on newsstands now, that the Samantha Who? star, 36, is handling the diagnosis with fortitude.
"She is doing amazing and can fight any challenge life throws at her," pal Lance Bass tells Us.
Actor Barry Watson agrees: "I know Christina really well, and I know she will get through this with a positive attitude and a great sense of humor."
With a family history of the disease (mom Priddy had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery when Applegate was 7-years-old and later underwent a hysterectomy), the actress is well equipped to cope.
"This diagnosis is a positive reinforcement of the importance of being vigilant with one's health," says Diana Rowden, the VP of health sciences at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, which Applegate has long supported.
Applegate's battle is her second struggle in weeks, as she's still grieving over the untimely death of ex-boyfriend Lee Grivas, who was found dead from an apparent drug overdose July 1.
Nevertheless, while the actress is one of 8,000 women under 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, friends, family, and supporters are rallying to her side and she's expected to fully recover.
Check out the latest issue of Us Weekly, available now, for the complete story behind how Applegate found out, what she learned from her mother's cancer struggle, what friends and co-stars say about her strengths, plus the 411 on breast cancer for women under 40 and an update on celebrity cancer survivors.

PRODUCER: CANCER TELETHON WILL BE 'COMFORTING' FOR CHRISTINA APPLEGATE Blog

Christina Applegate, who announced on Aug. 2 that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, will find participating in Sept. 5's Stand Up To Cancer telethon "comforting," the producer of the one-hour, televised fundraising event tells PEOPLE.
"We love her, and that's why we reached out to her, and she happily agreed to participate," the telethon's producer Laura Ziskin, herself a breast-cancer survivor, tells PEOPLE, adding she reached out to the Samantha Who? star before she announced her diagnosis.
"To be on the show and to hear other people, it's comforting to be around other people who've been through it," says Ziskin – adding that a sense of community among those whose lives are affected by cancer is key to the special event, which will air simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS. "This is really the vibe of the show," says Ziskin, whose other producer credits include the Spider-Man franchise, as well as the Oscars. “I hope [Applegate] feels it. We are all there for her now, and know what she's going through. We're all thinking of her and praying for her."
Regarding Applegate's role on the telethon, which will also feature the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Meryl Streep, Ziskin tells PEOPLE, "I'm in the midst of doing the script now, and obviously because of her diagnosis that may change, but I'm looking forward to talking to her about what she can do on the show."
Ziskin also says that all the guest stars, including Applegate, will also answer telephones from viewers calling in pledges.
As for words of encouragement to Applegate, 36, Ziskin, whose breast-cancer diagnosis was made four years ago, said, "She found it early. She's going to get through the treatment, and she'll be okay. She needs to say, 'I have an illness, I have to treat it, and be good to my body and not over-stress myself,' and then she'll get well."

BREAKING NEWS: CHRISTINA APPLEGATE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER Blog

Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer her rep confirmed Saturday.
"Benefitting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening," the Emmy nominated Samantha Who? star's rep said in a statement. "Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."
Applegate's mother is a breast cancer survivor.
"The first time she was diagnosed I was a very young girl – probably 7. I'm not sure it really fully hit me at the time, but she had to undergo surgery and have a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery," Applegate, 36, told USA Today in 2003.
"It was devastating for my mother to lose one of her breasts and have to go through all that," Applegate said. "It is a very personal cancer for the women it affects. This is about women's womanhood. It's one of the aspects of our femininity."
Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the 15-54 age group.
