SHIA LABEOUF PAL: 'I HAVE HIS BACK' Blog
It's been a rough summer for Indiana Jones star Shia LaBeouf, who crushed his hand in a car accident resulting in his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. But don't count him out, says a pal.
"He's been through a lot, he's had a hard life, and he grew up with some scars. But he's a fighter," says Christy Carlson Romano, who costarred with LaBeouf in the Disney TV series Even Stevens. "I have his back."
But LaBeouf is no angel, she admits. "In fact, he's crazy like a rock star!" she says. Doctors performed extensive surgery on LaBeouf's left hand in July following his car cash. Although he was cited for misdemeanor DUI at the time, police have said the actor may not have been at fault for the crash because the other driver apparently ran a red light.
"I'm not an advocate of drinking and driving," Romano tells PEOPLE at a Samsung event Sept. 3 in New York City honoring fashion designer Valentino. "But I think that the criticism is a little overexaggerated. In Los Angeles, even if you have one drink, that counts as a DUI."
Despite the setback, Romano doesn't think LaBeouf's rising star was tarnished.
"I grew up with girls like Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Duff, and I can tell star quality when I see it. He's got it," says the actress, who played Shia's big sister Ren Stevens in the Disney original series and will now be joining the cast of Broadway's Avenue Q.
She notes that LaBeouf still jokingly calls her "sis" but "he doesn't call me up for advice!"

JESSICA SIMPSON: "HOPEFULLY I'M MARRIED IN 10 YEARS" Blog
Her marriage to Nick Lachey may not have worked out, but Jessica Simpson still wants to walk down the aisle again someday.
"I would love to be making records and making babies, and hopefully I'm married in 10 years," she tells Fox News in a new interview. "I have the dreams of every normal person."
Look back at Jessica Simpson's rocky love life.
In the meantime, she is working on her other "baby" - her her country album, Do You Know, which drops September 9.
On the album, she sings "Remember That," a tune about an abusive relationship. (She has said, "There's nothing on my album ... that I don't relate to or that I haven't experienced.")
"It was one of those moments that just moved me to tears — it's empowering," she says of the song, which she didn't write.
"It's about that woman really standing up for herself in an abusive situation - whether it is mental, physical, emotional," she goes on. "Everybody has dealt with abuse in some sort of way."
She adds, "I thought it was important to tell women to take their heart and run as fast as they can if they're in that situation, because you're better than that."
But things are going swimmingly with Simpson and beau Tony Romo, she says.
"Tony understands me," she tells September's Elle. "He appreciates my talent. He's the first person I've spiritually connected with."
She recently shot down Carrie Underwood's claim that Romo is still calling her.
"If Tony wanted to call her and be with her, he would," Simpson sniped.
Did you know Jessica Simpson was bullied as a teen? See other celebs who were taunted too.

"We've done tons of [musical numbers], and she was just phenomenal," Letscher said at the premiere of his new film Towelhead in L.A. on Tuesday.
Holmes, 30, who has been rehearsing in New York City for her upcoming Broadway debut in arthur Miller's All My Sons, also made a good first impression on the set.
"She's the sweetest person in the world, down to earth, simple," says Letscher. "She's just like anybody else. I met her daughter and her husband was on set. It was great."
So, is there hope she'll return for more episodes? "They've left it open," says Letscher. "I think she a had a great time, which made it easier. Everyone was welcoming and it couldn't have worked out better."

FIRST LOOK: OPRAH HOSTS PHELPS AND OTHER OLYMPIC CHAMPS Blog
Even face-to-face with Oprah Winfrey, Michael Phelps remains mum on the topic of his private life.
But in terms of Olympic-sized revelations, Nastasia Liukin admits she gained inspiration from The Secret, while Kobe Bryant confessed to his surprise at finding he has so many fans in China.
As promised by the talk-show queen, the trio and some 150 other U.S. Olympic team members reunited on The Oprah Winfrey Show Wednesday for that program's 23rd season opener – delivering a gab session and pep rally that drew more than 5,000 fans to Chicago's Millennium Park. The episode will air Monday. Amid banners and red, white and blue confetti, Phelps, Liukin, Bryant, Shawn Johnson and others paraded through the cheering crowd before settling onstage to witness with the audience some of the most exciting Olympic moments replayed on giant video screens.
Happy to Be Home"It's good to be back on American soil," said Phelps, 23, grinning shyly and wearing only one of the eight gold medals he took home for swimming.
Asking the most pressing question, "Are you single?," Winfrey was told by Phelps, "I try to keep my private life private."
Bryant, joined by others on the winning men's basketball team, said the players made a conscious effort to bring back gold and remedy what had become the sullied reputation of American players.
"We made it a personal challenge. It was a priority" to take arrogance out of the game, he told Winfrey. In response to all the attention he received from adoring Chinese fans, Bryant, 30, admitted, "It caught me off guard."
Female AppealAthletes such as gymnast Nastasia Liukin and swimmer and Dara Torres also appealed to Winfrey's largely female audience.
Liukin, 18, cited the inspiration she received from The Secret, a self-help book popularized on Winfrey's show. Recalling her pre-China prep, "I said, 'I guess I should read it, Oprah read it,' " said the winning athlete.
As for Torres – at 41, the winner of three silver medals in Beijing – the swimmer and mother of a 2-year-old said age shouldn't limit one's dreams. "All the mothers out there are my role models," she said.

CHRIS EVERT & GREG NORMAN'S KIDS 'ALL MESH PRETTY WELL' Blog
Two months into their marriage, Chris Evert and Greg Norman's families are easily becoming one, the tennis star told PEOPLE Monday.
"They all mesh pretty well," Evert said at a press conference in Miami to announce her involvement in a new tennis center at the Costa Blanca resort in the Dominican Republic, where Norman is designing a golf course. "His two kids are older, they live away from home. He lives with me and my three sons in Boca."
Of her sons with ex-husband Andy Mill – Alex, 16, Nicky, 14, and Colton, 12 – getting along with Norman, she added, "It's working out very well." Evert and Norman looked more like high-school sweethearts than married 53-year-olds as they walked into the press room holding hands. Then, when Evert fielded questions from reporters, the most personal came from a surprise source: her husband.
"So, how is your marriage working out?" Norman asked, with a big grin. Evert, only slightly flustered, said, "So far, so good. At least, I hope it's good." Then she smiled back at Norman and said, "It's gonna be great forever."

Kate Hudson is opening up once again on just how well she gets along with her ex Chris Robinson.
"Look — we're still basically living together! We've figured it out," the actress, 29, tells the October issue of Cosmopolitan. "I mean, obviously, nothing's perfect, but I could never look at [our divorce] as a mistake.

She told W that she and their son Ryder, 4, "iChat with Chris constantly.

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY CALLS CAMILA 'THE LOVE OF MY LIFE' Blog
They may not be married, but Matthew McConaughey calls the mother of his child, Camila Alves, "the love of my life."
"I always wanted to be a father and thought it would be great, but it just took the right woman and the right time to make it all happen," he told PEOPLE as he unwound after running Sunday's Nike + Human Race in Austin, Texas.
(The 10-kilometer run took place on the same day in 25 cities around the globe, raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund and NineMillion.org.)
"[Camila] is the love of my life," he said after crossing the finish line in under 44 minutes (beating his goal of 45). "Everything is right. It's all good." Post run, he and Alves – a model and handbag designer who gave birth to their son in early July – brought baby Levi to check out the Ben Harper concert. (Little McConaughey was wearing tiny jeans and – yes – a white tee shirt.)
"We're a family now," said the Surfer, Dude star. "I see the future and it's clearer to me now. Walking around with this cool responsibility all the time, it's a wonderful thing."
(He's not even two months old, but concerts are already becoming old hat to Levi. His dad took had already taken him to see a John Mellencamp show.)
"We have a little bit more prep-time put into going places and doing things, getting him ready and everything," he said while relaxing in the VIP area. "But it's amazing."

JEFF GORDON: I'M MARRIED TO 'AN AMAZING WIFE AND MOTHER' Blog
A daredevil on the racetrack, Jeff Gordon credits his wife, Ingrid, for being the rock in his family life.
"She's an amazing wife and mother," Gordon, 37, told PEOPLE at Wednesday's Pepsi 500 Running Wide Open party in Hollywood, which he cohosted with Pharrell Williams. "You've got to have a wife that's very understanding. I'm lucky to have that."
He explains, "It's because she wakes up everyday at 7 a.m. and does everything that she possibly can for her little girl – our little girl – and for me."
Gordon's model/actress wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, gave birth to their daughter, Ella Sofia Gordon, in June 2007. Gordon told reporters that the best part of fatherhood is "waking up every morning and seeing her look in your face. The love, there's nothing like it."
In the midst of racing season, Gordon will compete in Sunday's Pepsi 500 race in California, after a successful contest recently at Bristol.
As for their home life, Gordon says Vandebosch picks up the slack when he's busy with work. "We try to travel together. I do everything I can to get home as often as I can. She's the greatest mom on the planet."
Asked if they want more kids, Gordon said, "Maybe!" And even though he's had a year of practice being a dad, he's still open to words of wisdom on the subject. "Everybody I know that becomes a parent reads every book they possibly can," he said. "Any advice I get, I'm going to take it."

JOHN MCCAIN & SARAH PALIN ON SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING Blog
Even the kids were in the dark.
Meghan McCain, 23, didn't find out until a few hours before the rest of the nation. Track Palin, 19, an Army private on base in Fairbanks, Alaska, got the news in a text message an hour before his mother, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took the stage in Dayton, Ohio, as John McCain's pick to be his running mate. "I said, 'Track! Turn the TV on in an hour,'" Sarah Palin told PEOPLE. "He says, 'What does this mean? Am I going to have to crawl in a hole?' And I said, No! Because he had no idea; he doesn't even know where we
are."
Where they were was the Nutter Center college sports arena in Dayton, Ohio. And PEOPLE was there for an exclusive backstage interview with the McCain and Palin families suddenly joined in the campaign for the White House. Sarah Palin, in ruby red peep-toe platform heels that showed off a pink French-style pedicure, first ducked into a holding room to change the diaper of her just-up-from-a-nap 4 1/2-month-old son, Trig.
The two families were all smiles...
Meghan, what did you tell your father about his selection?MEGHAN MCCAIN: It's Girl Power and you know I'm all about that. She's very smart, has a sweet family. Her son's in the military and my brothers are in the military. We have a lot in common. This is my dream choice. I almost started crying on stage – and I am not a crier – when they were talking about this being the anniversary of women's suffrage. I couldn't be more proud. It's also a reinvention of the Republican Party. She's such a cool role model-and she's got great shoes! (Laughs) What does Governor Palin need to know about working with your dad?MEGHAN: He likes to get up early in the morning and go. Seems like
she likes to do that too. I guess with a baby...JOHN MCCAIN: ... she has to be. (Laughter)SARAH PALIN: Morning person. Yup. We don't sleep much. Too much to do. What I've had to do, though, is in the middle of the night, put down the Blackberries and pick up the breast pump. Do a couple of things different and still get it all done.
As a new mom, how are you going to juggle all this?SARAH: I am thankful to be married to a man who loves being a dad as much as I love being a mom so he is my strength. And practically speaking, we have a great network of help with lots of grandparents and aunties and uncles all around us. We have a lot of help.
So will your husband be on leave now indefinitely to be Mr. Mom?SARAH: I would say so, yes.
Gov. Palin, when you were 13 weeks pregnant, last December, you had an amniocentesis that determined Trig had Down syndrome.SARAH: I was grateful to have all those months to prepare. I can't imagine the moms that are surprised at the end. I think they have it a lot harder.

MICHAEL PHELPS MAKES A SPLASH DURING YMCA VISIT Blog
Michael Phelps faced his toughest competition yet this week in New York City: a group of 6-to-12-year-olds!
The eight-time Olympic gold medalist visited the McBurney YMCA in Manhattan on Thursday to hand over a $20,000 check on behalf of Visa as part of the Play Every Day partnership. Phelps, not surprisingly, spent most of his time in the water, running drills, racing, and slapping high fives with the kids.
"He was very gracious and spent a lot of time with the kids in the water," Mike Spezzano, vice president of programs and membership for the YMCA of greater New York, told PEOPLE Friday. "They swam against Phelps, which is something they'll be saying for the rest of their lives."
Phelps partnered with Visa and Play Every Day, which aims to get kids more physically active. The money donated to the YMCA will give 185 inner city second graders the opportunity to attend the YMCA for swimming lessons. Other funds will go to purchasing new equipment and expanding the organizations aquatic facilities.
"The spotlight is on him after all he's accomplished," Spezzano said. "Meeting with community organizations and kids when he could probably be doing a lot of other things says a lot about him as a person."

BEN AFFLECK'S UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTION WEEK Blog
Ben Affleck packed in so much time doing good at the Democratic Convention in Denver that it seems he barely had time for the main attraction – indeed, he and wife Jennifer Garner ended up catching Barack Obama's acceptance speech from their California home Thursday night.
"It's like a football game," Affleck, 36, told PEOPLE about the convention. "You go and you can hardly see the person, so you wished you would have watched it on TV."
As for where the time went in the Rocky Mountains, the actor – who's sprouting facial hair these days for his role in the movie "Extract, with Mike Judge – was packing 25-lb. boxes of food for America's Second Harvest, as part of a celebrity team that also included National Treasure's Justin Bartha. In a five-minute competition to see who could pack and wrap the most, Affleck's side whipped the Congressional squad that included Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern, 17 boxes to 15.
Affleck says he was drawn to Second Harvest two years ago after scouting film locations in a tough Boston neighborhood and discovering people forced to choose between food and housing or medical care.
"This is something people don't talk much about," says Affleck, "the 35 million people here in the U.S., including 9 million children, who are hungry."
Affleck also devoted time to poker – picking up a first-pace plaque in an event with the Poker Players Alliance to raise funds for Paralyzed Vets of America.
Not that his time was solely focused on packing food and poker. Both he and Garner hosted a table at the Impact Film Festival Party at 5 Degrees on Wednesday night, along with Forrest Whitaker, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Cooper.
Later they moved on to an after-party at EXDO Event Center, where Kanye West played.

BIGGEST LOSER'S ALISON SWEENEY IS GAINING – FOR BABY Blog
Losing weight is a must on The Biggest Loser – except for show's host, Alison Sweeney.
Sweeney, 31, is pregnant with her second child, a daughter, and those who watch the new season of the NBC reality series (which starts Sept. 16) will also see her belly start to expand.
"It's really the only time in your life that you're supposed to gain weight," Sweeney told PEOPLE at Tuesday's auction of celeb-donated jeans for Clothes Off Our Back, which benefits children's charities. "They say that you're eating for two, but you have to remember that one of the two is only five ounces. It's not the same." During her early months, gaining weight was the last thing on her mind. "I was really morning sick," she reveals. "It was brutal. I would order my favorite things from restaurants, and I would get it and say, 'Get that thing away from me.' Grilled chicken or tomatoes would be the worst. I would tell my husband to get it away from me."
Luckily there was one thing she could eat. "All I wanted was Cheerios – it was all I could eat for two months."
Satisfying Sweet ToothMorning sickness has long since passed, and Sweeney is now making the most of her cravings.
"I definitely have a sweet tooth with this pregnancy that I didn’t have with my son. With my son, I craved savory things. My doctor said to buy fruit at the farmer’s market. I bought a cantaloupe, and I had to stop myself from eating the whole thing. I cut it up and put it in this big bowl and then next thing I knew, half of it was gone," she says.
Sweeney still manages to work out, especially for what she considers her "problem" areas: "My butt, my thighs, my arms – the whole thing."
Her workouts range from hikes to her costar Bob Harper's spinning class. "I'm addicted to that – I definitely still do that while I'm pregnant," she says. "I try to make sure I don't do the same thing twice. … Everyday is different, and you can shake it up every day."

LINDSAY LOHAN SLAMS DAD FOR DISSING THE "GIRL THAT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME" Blog
Lindsay Lohan is livid that her father, Michael, publicly called her gal pal Samantha Ronson "a drug," and claimed she planned to sell Lindsay out in a tell-all book.
The 22-year-old actress - and Ronson, 31 - both took to their MySpace blogs (below) to sound off.
See what a body language expert has to say about Lindsay and Sam's relationship.
Lindsay Lohan:
DRUG FREE
Current mood: betrayed
Category: Life
If you have something to say to me, say it to my face- that's what i have believed my whole life- don't be a coward and say it to others first, let alone all the media in the world- i think we know where the rest of this blog is going...
If you guessed it had to do with my father- then you guessed right! It really hurts, because i have tried- after all that my mother and siblings have gone through, i really tried to make things work- For the hope of having a father again-wanting things to change- even though people have said, some people will forever remain the same.
Having said that- the people were right, and he is yet to change- but this time, without his daughter by his side- He has become a public embaressment [sic] and a bully- To my family, my co-workers, my friends, and a girl that means the world to me (its obvious who that is).
He has no idea what is going on in my life because i have chosen not to involve him in it- His recent attack on my life and my loved ones is simply for an ADDICTION THAT HE HAS- FAME. Why he feels the need to comment on anything in my life that i may want to keep private, is beyond comprehension- If he really cared about me and my life, then he would learn to respect my wishes by staying out of it.
Samantha has not and would never sell me out. Nor has my mother, who is wonderful.
This further proves that any information that my father has about me or the people in my life is internet based- and about as accurate as a page six item.
I'm not going to engage any further, though i probably could go on...
I have said enough, i have a therapist, and it is not the the camera man at x17.

SHUT THE F*** UP
Current mood: bullied
i really don't want to say anything because i feel like he wins- he, being the man who is so desperate for attention that he goes to the media whenever possible- i know i am being used, i am just a pawn- easy to sacrifice in order to feed his addiction. I was angry when i first read his attack on me, but- for me- i believe that actions speak louder than words... so now i just pity him- i am not standing in his way- i am not the reason that he has no contact with his daughter- he is- his need to throw a tantrum for the whole world to hear is- i am not going to go into a play by play defense- i feel no need to publicly defend my role in lindsay's life- i'm just sorry that she likes me more than him.
p.s. i'm not the one that is so lost that i need to use my relationship with lindsay to earn a living.... i am, always will and always have been here for her for her- not for anything else....so I think it's safe to say that there is not now and never will be a tell all..... written by me..... when does your book come out mr. lohan?

KATIE COURIC: CANCER 'DESTROYED MY FAMILY' Blog
Losing her husband and sister to cancer "obliterated" Katie Couric's dream for a happy and intact family. Now she's doing everything she can to fight back and spare others the same pain.
In between raising her two daughters – Ellie, 17, and Carrie, 12 – and anchoring the CBS Evening News, she's teamed up with a group of powerhouse women to create Stand Up to Cancer, a landmark, star-studded fund-raising special airing on Sept. 5 on NBC, CBS and ABC.
"[Cancer] completely destroyed my family twice. My husband, Jay, died when he was 42 and our daughters were 6 and 2," Couric tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's issue. "Three years after that, my sister, Emily, who had ironically read the eulogy at my husband's funeral, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer." She adds, "My life has never been the same since. Both of their diagnoses were incredibly bleak and devastating."
And husband Jay is never far from their thoughts, Couric says.
"He comes up in conversation a lot. The girls may do something, and I'll say, 'Your dad did this too,' " she says. "My children have lived longer without their dad than they have with him. But that doesn't mean we don't miss him every day. I often think, 'He would be so proud of them.' "
After Jay and Emily's deaths, Couric cofounded the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance in 2001 to continue the fight. More recently, she learned how desperately funding is needed to make important advances in cancer research. And she has high hopes for the Stand Up to Cancer event.
"I hope enough money is raised so cancer researchers can come up with a cure," Couric says. "But realistically I hope that it will put cancer on the front burner and empower people to help move science along so that progress can be made."

HILLARY CLINTON AND MICHELLE OBAMA TRADE COMPLIMENTS IN DENVER Blog
Even during her speech Monday at the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama says her mind was on her kids.
"School is about to start, and I was thinking about how I was going
to get Malia's books and locker combination," Obama told a room of supporters at the Emily's List gala in Denver, where she shared the platform Tuesday with a laudatory Sen. Hillary Clinton.
The two women spoke separately before the 2,500 supporters, many of whom had paid $5,000 for the
privilege of hearing Clinton preview what she is expected to say in Tuesday night's speech: "Work as hard for Barack Obama as you did for me."Clinton looked rested and fit, dressed in a beige linen suit, as she stepped to the podium to thank
her many followers at the fund-raiser for Early Money Is Like Yeast, a group that supports female candidates for government. She urged them to support the Obama/Biden ticket because
they "will champion the issues we care about."
Then Clinton lauded Michelle Obama, complimenting her on a "terrific"
speech at the DNC – though Clinton wasn't there in the Pepsi Center at the time. ("She couldn't just walk into the convention hall without being a distraction," a source tells PEOPLE about why Clinton didn't attend.)
Instead, Clinton had participated in an event promoting an issue

CHRIS EVERT ON GREG NORMAN: 'I'VE MET MY MATCH' Blog
The honeymoon is still going strong for Chris Evert and Greg Norman, almost two months after their June 28 Bahamas wedding.
Tennis star Evert, who stepped out solo Monday at the U.S. Open's 8th Annual USTA Serves' OPENing Gala in Queens, N.Y., told PEOPLE she's very happy to be a newlywed. "It's only [eight] weeks, I'd better be happy!" she said. "Or else, I'm in big trouble! I've met my match, I think."Their time together "has been wonderful," said Evert, who adds that golf legend Norman isn't too shabby at her sport either. "Yeah, he's a good tennis player."
Evert, 53, chatted at the gala with fellow tennis legends Monica Seles, Boris Becker, Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova and Ivan Lendl.
The big topic of conversation? Their children. "We all have kids now," says Evert, who has three sons with ex-husband Andy Mill: Alex, 16, Nicky, 14, and Coulton, 12. "We were just talking about is it better for kids to be good at everything, all sports, or be great at one thing."
This is the second marriage for Norman and the third for Evert.

PETE WENTZ ROCKS THE VOTE – & VOTES FOR BRITNEY Blog
In Denver at the Democratic National Convention, Fall Out Boy band members are doing double duty: announcing the Nov. 4 release of their third Island album, Folie á Deux, and playing to a sold-out house Monday for Rock the Vote – aimed at getting youth involved in the political process.
Talking backstage to PEOPLE before their concert, bassist Pete Wentz and singer-guitarist Patrick Stump say they don't want to preach from the stage, although Stump admits this is a "political record, but it's never going to say outright 'Vote for Obama.' "
In terms of their own leanings, Wentz, 29, says they are all "liberal democrats from the suburbs of Chicago," adding that his parents met when they were both working on a Joe Biden campaign.
Then, apparently trying to appear non-partisan, he says in the next breath, "I'm definitely not against voting for a Republican."
The two musicians were a bit more forthright on their choice in the VMA race, specifically why they voted for Britney Spears's video in the MTV competition, to be held Sept. 7.
Supports Britney SpearsWentz was there when Spears made a promo for the awards show. "I got to meet the elephant [in the video]," he says. "It was awesome. Britney really proves how much the fans really matter, because the fans really want to see Britney win and turn it around."
Even though the Fall Out Boys plan to attend the VMAs and have won in the past (and even hope to win again), they actually voted for videos oter than their own. "To be honest, I don't think this is the Fall Out Boys's year," says Wentz.
And while he didn't want to talk about the impending birth of a child with his wife, Ashlee Simpson, Wentz did admit he wants to live somewhere outside of Los Angeles, "because L.A. has become pretty boring to me."
Ultimately he says, the Wentzes want to end up in Chicago. "But," Pete insists, "we don't have plans tomorrow."

VIN DIESEL: FATHERHOOD IS A 'BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL THING' Blog
As an action hero Vin Diesel spends his time chasing bad guys and dodging explosions – but in real life he's just happy changing diapers.
The star of the upcoming Babylon A.D. – who welcomed
his first child, a
daughter, in April with girlfriend Paloma Jimenez – says
fatherhood has given him a whole new perspective.
"Someone once told me that, when you have a child, it opens up parts
of your heart that you never knew existed. And it is so true," Diesel
told Parade magazine. "It's like you have a child and you
think, 'Everything that I've done up until this point is insignificant
in comparison to being a father.' It's a beautiful, beautiful thing."
And Diesel says he's had plenty of parenting training – both on
and off screen.
"I had a lot of practice growing up. I was the oldest of the children
in my family. I had to do a lot of diaper-changing and lunch-making,"
he says. "I was taking my little sister to ballet, picking up my
brother, sort of being a super-nanny."
Diesel then parlayed that experience into 2005's The
Pacifier, which had him costarring with tiny tots.
"Working with babies on the set for so long, it really started to
bring out this desire to have a child," he says. "And it took a couple
years after that to find the right person and to hopefully be mature
enough to be a great father – which is really all you want to
do."

BARACK OBAMA REVEALS HOW HE POPPED THE QUESTION TO JOE BIDEN Blog
A photographer asks the Democratic presidential running mates Barack Obama and Joe Biden to squeeze together for a portrait. "We're kind of insecure," jokes Obama. Biden counters, "I carry my wife's pocketbook; I'm fine." "Okay," declares Obama posing for the camera, "get tight!"
When PEOPLE caught up with the candidates the day of their Aug. 23 announcement, the banter was easy between the pair, who were onetime rivals before Obama, 47, asked the senator from Delaware, 65, to join his ticket. Wives Michelle Obama, 44, and Jill Biden, 57, also joined the conversation.
This is the first mate you've chosen since Michelle.Barack Obama: That's a good point. Michelle Obama: Barack is looking for people who will challenge him, who will tell him no. Barack: That's exactly what you need [in a vice president]. MIchelle: That's why he married me. (Laughs.) So I'd tell Sen. Biden, don't pull any punches.
Now, if Sen. Biden starts yelling at you about picking up your socks... Barack: Then we're in trouble. Don't do that, Joe. Joe Biden: Don't worry.
How did you pop the question?Barack: I called his office and they had to hunt him down. When I finally got him he said he was at the dentist's office. I realized only later that he was being a doting husband, looking after Jill during a root canal.
How did Sen. Biden tell the family? Jill Biden: My granddaughter, Maisy, turned 8 and we were having a little birthday party for her. We had just finished blowing out the candles and were cutting the cake. Joe said to everybody, 'Hey, I have something that I'd like to announce.' And he said, 'Barack called me and asked me to be vice president.' Everybody – I get so emotional when I think about it – and everybody clapped and started hugging. Joe: Every single birthday, all of our kids and grandkids – no matter where they are – they come home to our house. We have this big old farm table [in the kitchen] and that's where we were. Maisy was totally unfazed. She said, 'Pop, can I have some more ice cream cake?'

GONE WITH THE WIND 'TWIN' DIES AT 90 Blog
Fred Crane, who had been one of the last remaining survivors from the cast of Gone With the Wind, died Thursday of complications from diabetes, his wife, Terry Lynn Crane, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was 90.
The couple had lived in Barnesville, south of Atlanta, where they ran a bed and breakfast called Tarleton Oaks – after Brent Tarleton, Crane's role in the 1939 Civil War epic. George Reeves, who was later TV's Superman, played his twin brother in the story, Stuart Tarleton.
Crane, a New Orleans native who was 20 at the time, actually delivered the opening line in the movie. Sitting with his brother and the beautiful Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) on the front porch of her plantation, Tara, he says: "What do we care if we were expelled from college, Scarlett? The war is going to start any day now, so we'd have left college anyhow." She famously replies: "Fiddle-dee-dee. War, war, war. This war talk's spoiling all the fun at every party this spring. I get so bored I could scream."
Most Popular Movie of All TimeThe film, the most eagerly awaited of its day, is still the most successful box-office hit of all time, with its ticket sales (adjusted for inflation) reaching $1.4 billion.
Only last month, Evelyn Keyes, who played Scarlett's younger sister Suellen O'Hara, died at 91.
Olivia DeHavilland, who played the key role of Melanie in the film, is still alive and well in Paris – at 92. Other, minor players still living are Ann Rutherford (who played sister Careen O’Hara), Cammie King (Bonnie Blue Butler), Alicia Rhett (India Wilkes) and Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes), according to the Journal-Constitution.
Like his "twin," Crane's other acting roles encompassed mostly TV work, including work on Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Married five times, Crane is survived by four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

BARENAKED LADIES SINGER MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVES PLANE CRASH Blog
Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson and all three other passengers walked away from a small plane crash Sunday in rural Ontario, Canada.
Robertson is "really lucky" to have survived the wreck, deputy fire chief Brian Sears told the Intelligencer, a local paper. He added that the singer and three passengers escaped through a window and "didn't even have a scratch."
The incident happened around 12:30 p.m., when the Cessna 206 float-plane went down in some woods soon after take-off from Baptiste Lake, west of Ottawa.
"Everyone is fine, and that is the important thing," Adam Smith, a spokesman for the band, told the paper. "That's all the comment we have at this time." It's been a rocky few months for the group. Robertson's bandmate Steven Page faces drugs charges after his July arrest.

FOUR-EARED FELINE BECOMES INTERNET SENSATION Blog
Talk about seeing double: A 2-year-old, gray house cat with an extra pair of ears and named after Star Wars's Jedi master Yoda has taken the Internet by storm – thanks to online photos showing off his iTALIC "four"] ears.
Yoda's owner, Valerie Rock, tells PEOPLE that it was her son, a part-time photographer, who helped launch her beloved pet into the celebrity galaxy.
"The way he tells it, the picture just kept getting more and more hits on this Web site," says Rock, 65. "Over time, it kept getting higher and higher until finally a news agency in the U.K. called him and asked to use the photo and story. Then it just blew up." That's when the cat got out of the bag. "Three major newspaper in the U.K. ran [The story], says Rock. "We thought it had finally died down, but then the same frenzy began in the U.S. Everybody from Good Morning America to Tyra Banks has called."
Nobody's Purr-fectRock, who resides in Downer's Grove, Ill., and her husband, Ted, discovered Yoda while they were watching a Bears game at a Chicago bar in 2006. They noticed the cat in a cage atop the bar and learned a woman was selling a litter of kittens. Yoda was the last to go.
As the cage was being passed around – while others in the bar made catty remarks about him – the couple noticed the cat's extra adornments.
"We heard people calling it 'Devil Cat' and 'Beelzebub,' " Rock says. Yoda's crowning glory, Rock would learn, are "extra flaps that didn't grow together" caused by a genetic defect.
"People were making comments like, 'If I were you, I wouldn't take this cat. It's evil,' " says Rock, who had lost a Siamese cat of 20 years months before Yoda happily entered her life.
She was not deterred. "[Yoda] is a very affectionate and social cat," says Rock. "He sleeps with my husband and me in the bed."
As for the obvious question: "His hearing is normal," she says. "And he really only has two ears, two holes. He's as normal as can be."

THE JOE BIDEN YOU DON'T KNOW – YET Blog
Joe Biden has been a U.S. Senator for 35 years – more than half his life – and has twice run for President. So you might think you already know all there is to know about the guy Barack Obama picked to join his campaign for the White House. PEOPLE went exclusively backstage at Saturday's Obama-Biden rally in Springfield, Ill. – and learned a few things that might surprise you about the 65-year-old Democratic vice-presidential nominee from Delaware:
1. He used to stutter. Badly. And got teased for it."They called him 'Buh-buh-Biden,' " Obama told the crowd of supporters as he introduced his running mate. Afterward, Biden told PEOPLE that he didn't fully overcome his stutter until his junior year at the University of Delaware. "I had to screw up all my courage to take a public speaking class in college." And now? "I don't worry about it," he says, "but every once in a while you catch yourself and you're like, 'Oh, man.' It's not very often, but it's a humble reminder."
2. Family tragedy nearly derailed Biden's political career one month after he won his first Senate race in 1972.Biden's wife and college sweetheart, Neilia, was behind the wheel with their three children to get a Christmas tree when a drunken driver struck their car. Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi were killed, and their two toddler boys were badly injured. Obama described a somber swearing-in for Biden that January: "There was no ceremony in the Capitol; instead, he was standing by his sons in the hospital room where they were recovering."
3. He later survived his own brush with death. Twice. In 1988, after his first presidential run collapsed under a plagiarism scandal, Biden underwent surgery for two brain aneurysms. "They gave him slim odds to recover. But he did. He beat it," said Obama.
4. If the Guinness World Records were to count Amtrak frequent-traveler miles, Biden's would be in contention.Every work day, the Senator commutes by train – 90 minutes each way – from his home in Wilmington, Del., to the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Michelle Obama says it's one of her favorite things about her husband's running mate. "I like the fact that Joe's on that train every day getting back home," she told PEOPLE. "Those are the kind of values that I respect."
5. He carries a lucky charm.A Catholic once schooled by nuns, Biden carries a rosary in the change pocket of his pants and even had one under his pillow during his brain surgery. But he has to keep getting replacements. "I think people steal them on me," he joked on Saturday, one of the rare occasions he was without his holy prayer beads. "I did have it with me [earlier], but I had a light blue suit on and Jill said, 'No, wear a dark one.' So I changed my suit and forgot the rosary in my pocket."
