Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish, who only recently took their relationship public, are thriving as a couple, according to a friend.
"They're great," Rob Brown, Phillippe's pal and castmate in last spring's Stop-Loss, told PEOPLE last week at the Hollywood premiere of The Express. "I was with them last night. They're good people."
Phillippe, 33 and Cornish, 26, were rumored to have been dating for months but only attended their first major event as a couple in June, when he proudly accompanied her to the 2008 Australian in Film Breakthrough Awards.Phillippe called his divorce from Reese Witherspoon – who is now dating Jake Gyllenhaal – "the darkest, saddest place I had ever been."
But, says Brown, the actor has recovered well and has made the best of a difficult time. "Yeah, he's alright," Brown said. "He's in good spirits and he seems happy. And I'm happy for him."
Brown – who stars with Dennis Quaid in The Express, about college football hero Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy – also credits Phillippe for helping prepare him for the role as Davis.
"Every time I work with someone who's more tenured than I am, I just have to sop up whatever knowledge they have, and that’s what I did with Ryan," Brown said. "In a lot of ways working on that film prepared me for this film."

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have taken their romance overseas: The couple were spotted stepping out together in Morocco over the weekend.
On Saturday, the pair strolled hand-in-hand, checking out bazaar stalls before stepping into the shade for lunch in Marrakech, according to French Web site purepeople.com. On Sunday, the couple reportedly stayed back in their suites at the fabled 5-star Amanjena Hotel, a spring fed luxury oasis resort with a view of the Atlas Mountains.
Witherspoon's visit to Morocco, where a seriously buffed out Gyllenhaal is filming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, comes less than a month after the couple spent an extended Bastille Day holiday in Paris.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal aren't headed down the aisle just yet.
The Daily Mail has reported that the actor, 27, "is telling everyone they are getting married at Christmas" after he proposed "several times" and "she finally said yes."
But his rep tells Usmagazine.com: "The Daily Mail reports are false."

That's not to say the couple aren't serious.
A source tells Us Weekly that he has moved into her $5 million L.A. home.

"It was Jake's idea," a Witherspoon pal told Us, adding that the two are "trying out what it means to coexist as a family.
"Reese was willing to try it because Jake had assured her he is 100 percent committed for the long haul."

Reps for Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are denying tabloid reports that the couple are engaged.
"They are not engaged, getting married or any of the reports," the reps tell PEOPLE exclusively, calling the reports "lies."
Witherspoon, 32 and Gyllenhaal, 27, began quietly dating in April 2007. They recently were seen together in Paris with Witherspoon's kids.

The romance between Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon is soooo "right," a friend of the couple tells PEOPLE.
"I dig Jake and Reese together," says Clifton Collins Jr., an old pal of Witherspoon, 32, and Gyllenhaal's costar in the upcoming film Brothers. "They seem happy."And Collins Jr., should know. "I've known her since she was 17 – we used to have the same agent. She's precious. She's fun and sweet, and dedicated – she really cares about her work," he tells PEOPLE at the Maxim Extreme Sports Party on Thursday at the Stork club in Los Angeles.
Gyllenhaal, 27, seems a great match for her, he says. "He's got this big, lovable heart. He's just like that."
So would Gyllenhaal make a good dad?
You betcha, he adds. In fact, "He's a big kid. And he's very playful." Indeed, Gyllenhaal has had a lot of practice: He's uncle to 22-month-old Ramona, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal's child with Peter Saarsgaard, and has been spending lots of time with Witherspoon and her kids, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4.
Watching Gyllenhaal and Witherspoon together, "I see smiles, so something's gotta be [going] right," Collins Jr. says.
