| INSURANCE SALESMAN-TURNED- OPERA-SINGER WINS AMERICA'S GOT TALENT Blog |
Opera singer Neal E. Boyd is America’s Got Talent’s Best New Act.
Boyd, 32, took home top honors on Wednesday's season finale after a summer of competing against variety acts ranging from a Britney Spears impersonator to fire breathers and dance troupes. For his efforts, the Missouri native earned a gig headlining an Oct. 17 Las Vegas revue at the MGM Grand Hotel and a $1 million prize.
"I didn't think I'd make it this far or that America would respond to opera – but they did," an emotional Boyd told host Jerry Springer shortly before his win. "I can't thank America and the judges enough."
Heralded by judge Piers Morgan as untouchable, Boyd beat out fellow top five contenders, singers Queen Emily, Donald Braswell and Eli Mattson, along with fan favorite violin music group Nuttin' But Stringz on Wednesday's show.
Boyd and second place finisher Mattson were within one-half of one percent of each other in the voting, marking the closest finish in the show’s three-season history.
An added bonus for Boyd on Wednesday's finale? A taped message from one of his operatic idols, Placido Domingo, who sent the singer his congratulations.
"Be proud [of your accomplishments]. From today on, you are starting a brilliant career," Domingo told Boyd.
