BRITNEY 'GETTING OPPORTUNITY TO START OVER' AT VMAS Blog
Britney Spears is back. Or at least she will be – in some capacity.
The pop star will again openMTV's Video Music Awards, which will broadcast live from Los Angeles's
Paramount Studios on Sunday night (9 p.m. ET). But unlike last year, where
Spears delivered a memorable (and critically derided performance, the pop star
is not expected to perform on the show.)
"She gets an opportunity to start over again," hip-hop producer Jermaine Dupri told PEOPLE at Friday's TAG Records Official MTV VMA Kickoff party in Hollywood at Avalon. "A lot of people don't get a chance to do that again. I just hope she kills it."
And the man who's helped launch the careers of platinum artists TLC, Kris Kross and Da Brat added, "Last time, I didn't think her performance was that bad, but people ragged her so bad, then I saw the press."
So what will she do?The singer's role on the show has been a tightly guarded secret. Regardless
of how she fares live, Spears may just prove to be the talk of the night.
That's because she's nominated for the show's top honor, video of the year, for "Piece of Me." The pop star has earned two other nominations, including best pop video and best female video – also for the same single. (If Spears wins, it will be her first "Moonman" despite 16 prior nominations.)
Also up for top honors are the ceremony: the Jonas
Brothers (for "Burnin Up"), Chris Brown for "Forever,"
the Pussycat Dolls for "When I Grow Up" and the Ting Tings for "Shut Up and
Let Me Go."
Nominees the Jonas Brothers will also perform on the show. They will join a starry group of singers, including Rihanna, who will take the stage with rapper T.I., and Pink, who will also grace the stage. "I Kissed A Girl" singer Katy Perry is expected to perform a cover of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and Kid Rock will perform with rapper Lil Wayne.
Kanye West will close out the evening with a performance.
Hosting this year is British comedian Russell Brand, known for his role a
lothario musician Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But
he will be joined onstage by Pete Wentz, who will act as
a co-host of sorts. (Wentz's wife Ashlee
Simpson-Wentz is expected to present on the show.)
Also presenting: previously
announced stars including Miley Cyrus and
Lindsay Lohan. In days leading up to the ceremony, MTV
has added new presenters, including Christina Aguileraand Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford.

Phelps, 23, will also be a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday.
Last week, Phelps landed a book deal for his memoir, titled Built to Succeed.
"The bullying and adversity made him be stronger and work harder," his mom Debbie told Us Weekly.
"Michael may not have been able to focus in school, but I saw a passion for swimming at such a young age," she said. "He could be at a swim meet or practice for hours. It was a great outlet."

He has the wingspan of a condor and more gold than Flava Flav's teeth, but is Michael Phelps funny?

PINK, RIHANNA, T.I. AND PARAMORE WILL PLAY THE VMAS Blog
This year's MTV Video Music Awards might get a little explosive.
Multi-platinum artist Pink, Rihanna, Paramore and T.I. have signed on to perform at the 25th annual event, hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, airing live from Los Angeles on Sept. 7.
"I can't wait," said Pink, who added that she intends to "blow stuff up." The rocker, who performed her hit "Just Like a Pill" at the 2002 show, will treat the audience to her new single "So What."
Also returning to the VMA stage will be pop star Rihanna. She will follow last year's performance of "Umbrella," which won the video of the year award, with a live rendition of her new No. 1 hit "Disturbia."The frequent magazine cover girl is a contender in two categories this year: best female video for "Take a Bow" and best collaboration in a video for "If I Never See Your Face Again" with Maroon 5.
Rapper T.I. is also set to play the ceremony, following an arrest in Atlanta last October in the parking before the BET Hip-Hop Awards, which scuttled his plans to perform that night. His "No Matter What" is up for best male video this year.
The band Paramore, whose "Crushcrushcrush" is competing for best rock video and best art direction in a video, has been added to this year's parade of performers, rounded out by the Jonas Brothers, Kid Rock and Lil Wayne.

JONAS BROTHERS HEADED FOR NO. 1 ALBUM Blog
The Jonas Brothers are burnin' up the charts.
JoBro fans came out in droves on Tuesday, the day the band's third album, A Little Bit Longer, was released. Sales for that day alone were estimated at 201,000, according to Billboard. At this rate, the group, made up of brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick, will have their first No. 1 album next week.
"We are just really living the dream right now," Kevin Jonas told the Associated Press, "and for us, having this album finally hit stores and having [the fans] sing the songs, knowing that they can actually hear them and have it in their possession is the most amazing thing for us. We're so excited." Projections show Longer will hit around 700,000 in its first week, including digital downloads. That marks the third biggest opening of the year, behind Lil Wayne and Coldplay. The brothers' last album, Jonas Brothers, is also inching its way back into the top 10. If those sales hold up, it will be the first time in a decade since a group has had two top 10 albums at the same time. The last act to do so was N Sync in 1999.
The tween sensations spent the week in New York, playing Madison Square Garden, appearing on TRL and dishing about what they look for in girlfriends.
Up next for the brothers is a new show on Disney Channel, J.O.N.A.S.

USHER HIRES HIS MOTHER AS MANAGER – AGAIN Blog
R&B star Usher and his mother are working together once again.
"Usher has dissolved his management arrangement with Benny Medina and has re-engaged Jonnetta Patton as his manager," the mother and son said in a statement Wednesday.
According to a source, "He wanted her to come back on board and she decided to. He had really poor management and wanted her back." The source cited lackluster album sales as one of the reasons Usher decided to reconsider his management.
In his own statement, Medina told PEOPLE Wednesday, "With an artist like Usher, the bar is set really high. Whether it was management, marketing or the music, we achieved a number one single and a number one album. It is a completely new day and time in music now. In four years, his audience, demographic, and musical direction has changed. Records like Lil Wayne's 'Lollipop' are the type of phenomena that 'Yeah' was in 2004."Usher's publicist, Patti Webster, also resigned on Aug. 1.
Usher and his mother, who previously managed her son's career, parted ways professionally in May 2007, around the time the R&B singer got engaged to Tameka Foster. The couple postponed their wedding, partly due to family matters, including Foster's tense relationship with Patton, sources said at the time. Usher and Foster later wed in a quiet civil ceremony on Aug 3, 2007, then had their dream wedding later that month, which his mother did not attend.
In an interview with Vibe earlier this year, Usher would not characterize the split from his mom as a firing. Instead, he said he paid her "the ultimate compliment" by having her retire.
