MICHELLE WILLIAMS ON HEATH LEDGER: "IT JUST GETS WORSE" Blog

It's been nearly a year since Heath Ledger died at age 29 of a prescription drug overdose, and his ex, Michelle Williams, is still struggling to put the pieces together.
"It's so sad," she tells Newsweek when asked about Ledger, the father of her daughter, Matilda, 2.
Asked how she's been doing in the past year, she pauses for a very long time before saying, "I guess it's always changing.
"What else can I say?" she says after another pause. "I just wake up each day in a slightly different place -- grief is like a moving river, so that's what I mean by 'it's always changing.'
Look back at unforgettable photos of Heath Ledger.
"It's a strange thing to say," she goes on, "because I'm at heart an optimistic person, but I would say in some ways it just gets worse. It's just that the more time that passes, the more you miss someone. In some ways it gets worse. That's what I would say."
Williams -- who releases the indie drama Wendy & Lucy on Dec. 10 -- credits acting with saving "my life over and over again. It's given me a sense of self-esteem, self-worth. I have this thing that I'm in love with -- acting -- and now it has this baggage."
But she says she plans to take the year off the spend time with her daughter.
See touching photos of Heath Ledger and daughter Matilda.
She says she is fiercely protective of her girl. She recalls how she once found a tick on her daughter and almost called 911.
"I don't want to work while she's in school," Williams says of Matilda. "I want her to have a routine. I want the plainest, simplest, most ordinary, habituated routine possible. I just want to know what's coming next."

MICHELLE WILLIAMS ON MISSING HEATH: 'IT JUST GETS WORSE' Blog

It's been 10 months since Heath Ledger's tragic death. And. Obviously, Michelle Williams is still reeling.
In fact, during a recent interview with Newsweek, the actress – mother of Ledger's three-year-old daughter, Matilda – burst into tears at the mere mention of his name.
"It's so sad," the 28-year-old told the magazine of Ledger's death – ruled an accidental overdose of prescription drugs – in late January.
How is she holding up? "I guess it's always changing," she said. "What else can I say? I just wake up each day in a slightly different place – grief is like a moving river."
Although the two Brokeback Mountain stars had split before Ledger's death, they always remained close.
"It's a strange thing to say, because I'm at heart an optimistic person, but I would say in some ways it just gets worse," she said of her grief. "It's just that the more time that passes, the more you miss someone. In some ways it gets worse. That's what I would say."
The actress – currently starring in the indie flick Wendy and Lucy – says she's currently taking a year off to focus on her daughter.
"I don't want to work while she's in school," the former Dawson's Creek star (who's been linked to director Spike Jonze) told Newsweek. "I want her to have a routine. I want the plainest, simplest, most ordinary, habituated routine possible."

MICHELLE WILLIAMS' FATHER EXTRADITED TO U.S. Blog

Michelle Williams' father, Larry, has agreed to be extradited to the U.S. to face tax evasion charges, the Associated Press reports.
The 65-year-old, who is a prominent stock market trader, had been fighting returning to the U.S. since he was arrested in Australia in 2006 while on a speaking tour. He's been out on bail.
See Us' mugshot hall of fame.
The Virgin Islands resident is wanted for questioning by the IRS for allegedly evading $1.5 million in unpaid taxes stemming from book royalties and earnings from worldwide seminars he gave between 1990 and 2001.
Sydney's The Daily Telegraph reports Williams leaves for L.A. on Wednesday.
"I will fight this and win," the paper quotes Williams as saying before being escorted to court by sheriffs. "I will be back - I have a lot of friends here in Australia."
Michelle Williams is best known for her 2005 film Brokeback Mountain, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her 3-year-old, Matilda. The child's father, Heath Ledger, died from a prescription drug overdose last January.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS AND SPIKE JONZE: PDA ALERT! Blog

After months of low-key dating, it seems Michelle Williams and Spike Jonze are finally ready to take their romance public.
After attending a Cinema Society screening of their new film, Synecdoche, New York in Manhattan Wednesday night, the couple walked out of the auditorium with Jonze caressing Williams' back and wrapping his arm around her waist.
The pair held hands as they walked through the lobby, where they met up with Synecdoche costar Catherine Keener. While the two women chatted and munched on popcorn, Jonze snaked his arm around Williams' waist again.
"He couldn't seem to keep his hands off her," said an onlooker. "It was very cute."
But the sparks really started to fly later that night, when they headed to the Gramercy Hotel's rooftop club for the Mulberry-sponsored afterparty. While the two – who have been romantically linked since this summer – talked with friends, they stood so close they were "practically spooning," said one fellow guest.
And later, when they decided to leave the bash at around 1 a.m., Williams and Jonze shared a mini makeout session – on their way to the elevator.
Williams, 28 – who has an almost-three-year old daughter, Matilda, with the late Heath Ledger – met the director in 2006, when she audtioned for his film, Where the Wild Things Are. They reconnected last year, when she signed on to star in Synecdoche, which he produced.

LAWYERS: INSURER WON'T PAY $10 MILLION TO HEATH LEDGER'S DAUGHTER Blog

A life insurance company is balking at making a $10 million payout to Heath Ledger's nearly 3-year-old daughter Matilda, lawyers for the child claim.
ReliaStar Life Insurance Co. first wants to investigate whether Ledger died by suicide, which would allow the insurer not to pay, says attorney John LaViolette, representing Matilda’s estate, who filed a lawsuit in July.
According to the coroner, the actor died at age 28 from an accidental overdose. "There's no evidence out there we know of to remotely suggest the death was a suicide," says lawyer William Shernoff, who is working with LaViolette on the case. "We think it's more of stalling tactic than anything else."
Ledger, who had taken out the policy in June 2007, willed his estate to his parents and sisters, but family members decided that Matilda – Ledger's daughter with Michelle Williams – would get all the money.ReliaStar spokesman Dana Ripley says, "We have not yet rendered a decision on this claim." Ripley declined further comment.
"Given the very private and personal nature of the life insurance business and our decision to protect the privacy of policyholder, it wouldn't be appropriate to discuss any specific detail on this process or the policy," says Ripley.

HEATH LEDGER'S DAUGHTER TO INHERIT $16 MIL ESTATE Blog

Heath Ledger's 2-year-old daughter Matilda Rose will inherit the late actor's entire $16.6 million estate, according to Perth, Australia's Sunday Times.
The Dark Knight star -- who died last January of a prescription drug overdose at the age of 28 -- had named his parents and sisters as the beneficiaries in his will.
But the will was made before the birth of his daughter. Some reports speculated that Ledger's ex Michelle Williams would lodge a claim.
But Ledger's father Kim tells Perth's Sunday Times, "There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda."
Look back at memorable photos of Heath Ledger and daughter Matilda.
In March, Kim issued a statement: "Matilda is an absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family. They will be taken care of and that's how Heath would want it to be."
Both Williams and Ledger's family recently pledged to contribute an undisclosed amount to a scholarship to help emerging Australian actors and honor the memory of Ledger.
Applications are available online and will be accepted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 28, with the first beneficiary to be announced by mid-February.

HEATH LEDGER'S DAUGHTER TO INHERIT ENTIRE ESTATE Blog

Heath Ledger's family has decided to donate his entire estate to the late actor's daughter, Matilda Rose.
Two years before his little girl was born, the Dark Knight star – who died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January – signed a will leaving his fortune to his parents and sisters.
But Ledger's father, Kim, says they have decided that all the money should all go to 2-year-old Matilda (the actor's daughter with ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams).
In fact, he tells PEOPLE, that was the plan "from the moment my boy passed away.""There was never any question about the fact that Heath's estate would go to Matilda," he says, confirming a report in Australia's Sunday Times. "Never a question. We are very close to Michelle and Matilda."
All One FamilyAlthough Williams and Ledger were separated at the time of his death, the two remained close. In February, the actress joined the Ledgers in Perth for their son's memorial and wake.
When the details of the will first became public, Kim said Williams and Matilda "will be taken care of." He added, "That's how Heath would want it."
Kim, who is based in Australia, also tells PEOPLE that he and his wife, Ines, recently returned from a two-week visit with their granddaugher in New York City.
"It was lovely," he said. "There is no animosity [with Michelle] ... We are all just one family."
Although some reports have valued Ledger's assets at up to $20 million, Adelaide accountant Mark Dyson – an executor of the actor's estate – has refused to state the amount Matilda will inherit.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS SUPPORTS SCHOLARSHIP HONORING HEATH LEDGER Blog

A scholarship to help emerging Australian actors and honor the memory of Heath Ledger has launched – and Ledger's ex, Michelle Williams, is stepping up as the first donor.
The Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship will award recipients up to $10,000, and round-trip airfare from Australia, to pursue a career in the United States. Ledger was an Ambassador for AIF before his death in January; current ambassadors include Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts.
"Broke Aussie actors in LA form a tradition that goes all the way back to Errol Flynn," says Ned Kelly director and Ledger pal Gregor Jordan, who will be part of the scholarship's five-member judging panel. "Heath was definitely part of that tradition and this scholarship is something he would have been proud to have his name associated with."
The fund also has the support of Williams, who has pledged to contribute an undisclosed amount, and Ledger's family.
"We as a family are pleased with the establishment and progress of the AIF scholarship award named in honor of our much loved and generous son, Heath," said Ledger's father, Kim. "As a result of this scholarship, a talented Australian actor will gain valuable assistance to support their personal goals, and an opportunity for recognition in the very tough US film industry."
Plans for the scholarship were first announced in June at AIF's 2008 Breakthrough Awards. The selected actor must be over 18 and be in the early stages of his or her career. Applications are available online and will be accepted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 28, with the first beneficiary to be announced by mid-February.
Ledger, 28, was found dead Jan. 22 after an accidental overdose. A federal probe into his death was concluded in August.

ACTOR HEATH LEDGER'S BROOKLYN BAR OPENS Blog

Heath Ledger's bar, Five Leaves, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City is set to open on Wednesday, almost eight months after the actor's untimely death.
"It's all meant to be a super casual California- and Australia-tinged cafe, coffeehouse and oyster bar, with greenmarket snacks," a critic for UrbanDaddy.com wrote.
With steel light fixtures and "wire concoctions that seem right out of a lab," Five Leaves resembles "a bar that Thomas Edison might have built for his buddies," according to the review. The door to the bar's bathroom is a "massive, '20s-era boiler room door."
On the bar's menu? Sliced radishes on toast with Evans Farmhouse butter.

SOURCE: FEDS OFFICIALLY CLOSE HEATH LEDGER INVESTIGATION Blog

The U.S. Attorney's Office closed its investigation into Heath Ledger's accidental overdose death and will not enforce a subpoena against Mary-Kate Olsen, a law-enforcement source tells PEOPLE.
The probe was closed without any charges being filed.
Olsen, 22, had been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury, but agents had been seeking to interview her without enforcing the subpoena, the source says.
Olsen had wanted immunity before testifying. Olsen's attorney released a statement saying the actress "had nothing to do" with Ledger's drugs and had already provided "relevant information" to investigators.
Ledger, 28, was found dead in his Soho apartment on Jan. 22, and the coroner determined the actor died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs for pain, anxiety and sleep.Olsen Called When Body FoundThe federal probe focused on how he obtained Oxycontin and Vicodin, two powerful and often-abused painkillers for which Ledger had no prescription.
Masseuse Diana Wolozin found Ledger lying on his bed shortly after 3 p.m., and called Olsen three times, records show. The longest call lasted one minute and three seconds.
Wolozin told Drug Enforcement Administration agents she called Olsen because "it was the right thing to do" and spoke to her each time, but agents had not been able to confirm that with Olsen, the source says. They requested Olsen's phone records but had not yet received them, the source says.
Olsen's bodyguards arrived on the scene four minutes after
Wolozin called 911, and just as the paramedics were arriving. They, too,
cooperated with the federal probe but "had nothing pertinent to say," the
source says.
Olsen was the only person who declined to be interviewed in the investigation, the source said. Model Helena Christiansen was interviewed as was Ledger's ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams and Ledger's family and
friends.

REPORT: MARY-KATE OLSEN SEEKS IMMUNITY IN HEATH LEDGER INVESTIGATION Blog

Mary-Kate Olsen is refusing to talk to federal investigators about pal Heath Ledger's death until she is granted immunity from prosecution, the New York Post reported Monday.
The masseuse who found Ledger's body in January first called Olsen, 22, before contacting police. The Dark Knight star, 28, had died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and OxyContin.
See a photo retrospective of Heath Ledger's life.
Though Olsen's attorney has rejected multiple requests from federal officials to talk to the actress, she could face a grand-jury subpoena to testify, according to the Post.
Investigators have already spoken to Ledger's ex Michelle Williams, the masseuse, bodyguards, housekeepers and associates, the newspaper reports.
"Everyone has been very eager to help, saying what a great guy Heath Ledger was, everyone except Mary-Kate, who has refused to speak," a source told the Post.
Unlike inquiry into Ledger's death by the New York Police Department, which was completed with Olsen's cooperation, federal investigators are seeking information from the actress about where he got his drugs and medicines.
