Newly single Guy Ritchie was all smiles Thursday during a boys night out with his Sherlock Holmes stars Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.
After spending the day filming, the trio went to a private viewing of artist friend Sam Taylor Wood's new exhibition at the White Cube Gallery in London, the Daily Mail reports.
The 40-year-old director - who announced his divorce from Madonna last week - seemed to be in better spirits than a few days ago.
A source told Us he was "in pieces" after seeing a photo of his son Rocco, 8, in a T-shirt supporting Alex Rodriguez's New York Yankees baseball team.
"He's actually been crying over it," said the source of the shot, taken Monday in New York City. "He's in a terrible state but is doing his best to be on form at work."

Sherlock Holmes filming is expected to continue for another week.

While his divorce from Madonna goes from bad to worse with allegations of each other's failings, Guy Ritchie looked happy Thursday night as Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law took him out on the town.
The trio made a surprise visit to the White Cube Gallery in London's tony Mayfair district for a private-view exhibition held by British artist Sam Taylor-Wood.
"Guy was in great form, hanging out with friends having a good time," one gallery guest tells PEOPLE. "He seemed quite merry and had his arms around lots of people and smiling." Earlier in the day, Ritchie was seen directing Law, in a vintage three-piece suit and top hat, in a west London cemetery for the moviemaker's update of Sherlock Holmes.
"Guy seemed quite happy being out and about with his friends," adds the guest. "I think the distraction is just what he needed, especially the way he was smiling."
Ritchie and his posse are now expected to head to Manchester in northwest England to continue filming for another week.

Director Guy Ritchie was on the set of his latest film Sherlock Holmes near London when his divorce from Madonna was officially confirmed.
Ritchie spent a gray and wet Wednesday filming interior scenes with Sherlock star Robert Downey Jr. at Hatfield House, a 400-year-old mansion located on about 1,000 acres north of London.
But Ritchie couldn't escape the paparazzi - photographers were spotted exiting the estate dressed in camouflage clothes shortly after the divorce was confirmed. The UK's Sun had earlier reported that Ritchie will move out of the couple's central London home and into his own estate, which is located west of London in Wiltshire.
Ritchie is expected to continue filming this week in London before moving the film set to other locations around England.

Robert Downey Jr. will be getting a new sidekick in Iron Man 2.
Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard in the sequel, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Cheadle, 43, will step in as Jim Rhodes, best friend to Downey's Tony Stark/Iron Man, who in the Iron Man comic books later becomes the armor-wearing hero War Machine.Howard, who appeared in this summer's Iron Man, was reportedly replaced after negotiations fell apart over financial differences.
Iron Man stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are both expected back for the sequel, due out in summer 2010.

| TROPIC THUNDER EARNS $26 MILLION AS NO. 1 MOVIE Blog |
Tropic Thunder debuted as the No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend, earning $26 million and knocking The Dark Knight from five consecutive weekends at top.
Despite protests and boycotts about the use of blackface, the combat satire starring Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black has earned $37 million since opening on Wednesday.
Though The Dark Knight slipped to No. 2 with a weekend gross of $16.8 million, the flick is now the second-highest-grossing film in history.
With a total gross of $471 million, The Dark Knight surpassed Star Wars and ranks second behind Titanic's $601 million gross. The Dark Knight was also the fastest flick to earn $400 million.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars earned $15.5 million as the No. 3 movie this weekend while Mirrors starring Kiefer Sutherland came in fourth and Pineapple Express fell to No 5.

Tom Cruise may only have a small part in Tropic Thunder, but her ruled the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere.
Cruise, who donned a fat suit to play studio exec Les Grossman in the film, stayed close to wife Katie Holmes Monday night, greeting fans and only letting go of her hand to pose for a quick cast shot.
Other than the fans, fellow star were happy to see the couple – PEOPLE caught Matthew McConaughey, Ben Stiller and Jack Black all giving big hugs to Cruise. And costar Jay Baruchel told PEOPLE that Cruise is "the funniest guy in the world." Robert Downey Jr., who played an actor posing as an African-American in the film, said he just got out of character after wrapping up the DVD commentary. "The actor, in the movie, said that he never dropped character until the DVD commentary, and in keeping with being a 'method-idiot,' I'm never going to do it again," he said.
Stiller, who wrote, produced and acted in the movie, arrived with his wife Christine Taylor, who also had a cameo (She previously appeared in Stiller's Zoolander and Dodgeball.) .
"It was so much fun for us," Taylor said, adding of the third time she costarred with her husband, "I've gotten used to [it] through the years."
Later, Stiller told PEOPLE the secret to their eight-year marriage is "that it's all about mutual respect, and really being there for that other person. You can't take anything for granted."
As for Tropic Thunder facing some controversy, with Downey playing an African American and Stiller playing Simple Jack, a mentally disabled character, Stiller said simply, "It's a free country."

Protestors didn't dampen the celebratory mood for Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise at Monday's premiere of Tropic Thunder in Los Angeles.
Holding hands, Holmes — in heels that made her considerably taller than Cruise — and her husband walked the red carpet. After they finished taking pictures, they signed autographs for fans before heading into the theater.

During the last scene of the movie — which features Cruise in a dancing sequence — Holmes clapped loudly and couldn't stop laughing. (Cruise's kids, Connor and Isabella, sat behind them during the screening.)

"Tom Cruise is an absolute revelation in this movie," writer Etan Coen told Usmagazine.com. "People will not believe it. You won't be disappointed."

Despite Cruise's comedic twist, some are slamming the comedy – about a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie — for depicting a negative portrayal of those with mental handicaps. (Robert Downey Jr. also wears a blackface, a racially-charged, old showbiz convention.)
Across the street, protestors held signs, screaming "Tropic Thunder Colossal Blunder!" and "Ban the Movie!"
"I happen to disagree with them in regards to our film," actor Justin Theroux told Us of the protestors. "It’s a shame that they are out there, and I hope that when it comes out, they will actually see the jokes for what they are — a deep cutting satire of Hollywood and the stars."
Said Jack Black: "Everyone has the right to protest. It’s a free country. Anytime that anyone feels that they are justified in their heart, more power to them.
"I just think that the movie speaks for itself, and it’s amazing. I stand behind it, and I am so proud of this movie," he added. "It’s the best movie ever and my favorite movie of the year. That’s my comment.”

movie's main men, a mustachioed Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller, celebrated Thunder screenplay cowriter Justin Theroux's 37th birthday at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont. "They were
inside and took over the entire lobby," an onlooker says of the birthday
bash, which culminated in "fab chocolate cake."

in New York's SoHo neighborhood. The starlet danced along to the
store's soundtrack as she shopped.
• In Beijing for the Olympics,David Schwimmer and Chris Tucker, partying

It's been 25 years since he shimmied in his skivvies in Risky Business, but Tom Cruise can still shake it like a pro, according to his Tropic Thunder director Ben Stiller.
"The guy has moves," says Stiller, who also co-wrote and stars in the military-themed action-comedy.
Cruise, 46, is winning raves for his role as a vulgar, venom-spewing studio executive in the movie, in which he's nearly unrecognizable beneath a fat suit, a bald cap and a beard. The dancing was Cruise's idea, says his director.
"It wasn't in the script," Stiller said during a press day for the film. "He was like, 'You know, I really feel like I want this guy to dance.' "
Some of the physical transformation was Cruise's brainchild too. "He said, 'I really want to have some big, hairy hands,' " says Stiller. "I actually didn't have to sell him on anything."
Cruise isn't the only Thunder actor who took on a controversial, image-twisting role: Robert Downey Jr. has drawn praise for his portrayal of an African-American actor in the movie.
Tropic Thunder hits theaters Aug. 13.

It was an attack Camp Pendleton didn't see coming: Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. brought a full-scale laugh assault to the Marines there as they presented a special screening of their military-themed action-comedy, Tropic Thunder.
"We were really excited to show this movie to the military personnel who do so much for our country," Ben Stiller said in a statement. "I think they really got a kick out of seeing a bunch of spoiled actors complaining about how hard it is to do a war movie. But seriously, it was really hard. We almost did a boot camp, but then decided on a cast dinner instead."
Like a film premiere, there was a red carpet at the base's MCC Base Theater – only it was (fittingly) combat green-colored. And once the film's stars were inside the theater, they spent time meeting the troops, posing for pictures and then introduced the film.
Tropic Thunder blasts into theaters Aug. 13.

All's well with the marriage of Guy Ritchie and Madonna, the film director tells PEOPLE – "as far as I'm aware of," he added with a smile.
A relaxed and cheerful Ritchie, 39, joined the cast of his upcoming directorial effort RocknRolla on Thursday afternoon at the San Diego International Comic-Con.
Joined by his film's costars Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges to show scenes and sign autographs, Ritchie also spoke about how being married to the pop icon – whom he referenced only as "my wife" – had allowed him to look at his hometown of London with fresh eyes. "I was born there and I've seen it change and I know a great deal about it, I'm invested," the director said. "I live vicariously through my wife, so I was once a spy and now I've become a tourist, and it's much more fun to live in London as a tourist than it is as a spy."
He further observed, "Someone told me the definition was a spy always looks for the bad stuff, and a tourist always looks for the good stuff. So that makes it easy, being married to an American."
After spending time with Madonna, 49, in New York City – where the two faced intense speculation about the status of their marriage and she is rehearsing for her upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour – Ritchie headed to Los Angeles. There, he attended Kabbalah services and dined with Robert Downey Jr., who's set to star as Sherlock Holmes in a movie Ritchie will direct.

They may be all laughs together on the silver screen, but when it comes to friend Owen Wilson's attempted suicide last year, Tropic Thunder star Ben Stiller is gravely serious.
"I love Owen, and I felt bad that he had to deal with all the outside bulls--," the comic actor, 42, tells Playboy in its August issue. "It's impossible to understand that kind of pain – depression or anything like that – until you're in it."
On a cheerier note, Stiller admits to idolizing costar Robert Downey Jr. on the Thunder set. "Because I was so blown away by the guy, I started trying to copy him," he says. "It was like, Wow, this guy's a genius; maybe if I do what he does, I'll be a genius too!"
And as for leading-man Tom Cruise, who does an unflattering turn as a bald studio head in Tropic Thunder, Stiller was impressed with his enthusiasm.
"The role was his idea," he says. "It wasn't even in the script. I didn't have to persuade him."

Tropic Thunder director and star Ben Stiller has opened up about pal Owen Wilson's suicide attempt last August.
"It's impossible to understand that kind of pain – depression or anything like that – until you're in it," Stiller tells Playboy in the August issue of the magazine.
"I love Owen," he says of his Royal Tenenbaums co-star. "I felt bad that he had to deal with all the outside bulls--t."

Stiller, 42, also reveals that he was "blown away" by Tropic Thunder co-star Robert Downey Jr.
"I started trying to copy him," the comic says. "It was like, 'Wow, this guy's a genius; maybe if I do what he does, I'll be a genius too!'"
Stiller jokes: "If he had spun around and thrown oat bran at the moon, I'd have run out, bought some oat bran and started spinning. I want to look like I'm as big a genius as he is."
Tom Cruise's anticipated role as a studio chief – for which he wore a fat suit – in Tropic Thunder was his own idea, Stiller says.
"It wasn't even in the script," Stiller says. "I didn't have to persuade him."
The actor tells Playboy that "people would rather dwell on somebody else's problems than look at their own" – and revealed he's just like Us!
"Do I want to pick up a copy of U.S. News & World Report or grab Us Weekly?" he asks. "If I'm in a checkout line, I'll take the one with the big pictures."
So is there a line of humiliation that the jokester won't consider?
"I think I'd draw the line at porn, but no one has asked," Stiller tells Playboy.
Tropic Thunder opens August 13.
