Not everything Russell Brand said at Sunday's Video Music Awards was met with approval, but that's in keeping with the comic style of the controversial host of the show.
So, just who is this guy with the shaggy hair and the gall to call Britney the second Christ?
Here are five things you may not know about him: • He's 33 and born in Essex, east of London – just like David Beckham. And like Beckham, he's soccer-mad. He pens a column on the game for a national newspaper and supports West Ham. Raised by his mother, Barbara, after his father left home when he was 16, he has confessed to having eating disorder around age 12. "It was really unusual in boys, quite embarrassing. But I found it euphoric," he told the Observer in 2006.
• He was a standup comedian who made his name presenting youthful late-night talk shows in the U.K. and companion programs to Big Brother. His working life hasn't been without drama: MYV Europe fired him two days after arriving at work – "with typical restraint" – dressed as Osama Bin Laden. He blamed the episode on heroin (he was using the drug at the time), and has cleaned up since. Last year PETA voted him Europe's sexiest vegetarian.
• He has completed therapy, in Philadelphia, for sex addiction. "Sex is recreational for me," he wrote last year.
• He a reformed chauvinist. He says he "hasn't always treated women well" and has claimed to have had a "harem"of 10 women." Nowadays, however, he is a one-woman man. He is dating Australian actress Teresa Palmer, 22. She joined him Sunday at the VMAs.
• His career ranges from movies to books. Recent screen credits include 2007's St. Trinian's and this year's Forgetting Sarah Marshall. His autobiography, drawing on his experiences, has been a big hit, selling a phenomenal 600,000 hardback copies in the U.K. – the equivalent, per capita, of selling 3 million in the U.S., where it is set to be released this spring.

| BRITNEY 'GETTING OPPORTUNITY TO START OVER' AT VMAS Blog |
Britney Spears is back. Or at least she will be – in some capacity.
The pop star will again openMTV's Video Music Awards, which will broadcast live from Los Angeles's
Paramount Studios on Sunday night (9 p.m. ET). But unlike last year, where
Spears delivered a memorable (and critically derided performance, the pop star
is not expected to perform on the show.)
"She gets an opportunity to start over again," hip-hop producer Jermaine Dupri told PEOPLE at Friday's TAG Records Official MTV VMA Kickoff party in Hollywood at Avalon. "A lot of people don't get a chance to do that again. I just hope she kills it."
And the man who's helped launch the careers of platinum artists TLC, Kris Kross and Da Brat added, "Last time, I didn't think her performance was that bad, but people ragged her so bad, then I saw the press."
So what will she do?The singer's role on the show has been a tightly guarded secret. Regardless
of how she fares live, Spears may just prove to be the talk of the night.
That's because she's nominated for the show's top honor, video of the year, for "Piece of Me." The pop star has earned two other nominations, including best pop video and best female video – also for the same single. (If Spears wins, it will be her first "Moonman" despite 16 prior nominations.)
Also up for top honors are the ceremony: the Jonas
Brothers (for "Burnin Up"), Chris Brown for "Forever,"
the Pussycat Dolls for "When I Grow Up" and the Ting Tings for "Shut Up and
Let Me Go."
Nominees the Jonas Brothers will also perform on the show. They will join a starry group of singers, including Rihanna, who will take the stage with rapper T.I., and Pink, who will also grace the stage. "I Kissed A Girl" singer Katy Perry is expected to perform a cover of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and Kid Rock will perform with rapper Lil Wayne.
Kanye West will close out the evening with a performance.
Hosting this year is British comedian Russell Brand, known for his role a
lothario musician Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But
he will be joined onstage by Pete Wentz, who will act as
a co-host of sorts. (Wentz's wife Ashlee
Simpson-Wentz is expected to present on the show.)
Also presenting: previously
announced stars including Miley Cyrus and
Lindsay Lohan. In days leading up to the ceremony, MTV
has added new presenters, including Christina Aguileraand Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford.

Russell Brand is relatively unknown in the U.S. – but that didn't stop MTV from tapping the wild-haired British comic to host this year's Video Music Awards.
What should viewers expect?
"I'm English, so I've got impeccable manners," he tells PEOPLE. "But I'm borderline psychotic in areas of performance. So there will be risks because it's live. There's no point of things like that being live if there's no risk of maddening danger."
But despite those risks, Brand says, "I'm looking forward to presiding over the night of music and live mayhem." A bona fide celebrity in England, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star admits he's not recognized in the United States ... yet. "I'm just a man with an eccentric haircut."
So about that trademark coif – just what is his styling secret? "There's a fairy story about a cobbler who, as he sleeps, some elves [make] shoes in his workshop," he explains. "Every morning I wake and some sort of barber shop minions have taken care of me. I leap from bed each morning with an incredible scaffold on top of my head, like a bonnet."
Brand's chest hair is pretty impressive, too, he claims.
"I imagine it will soon be adopted from everyone from Barack Obama to Barbara Bush," he boasts.
Is that the elder Barbara, or her 26-year-old granddaughter?
"I don't mind," he says diplomatically. "I think the entire Bush family will enjoy my look."
