Nominees for the 2009 Film Independent's Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday.
Michelle Williams earned a Best Female Lead nomination for her role as a woman who travel to Alaska with her dog in Wendy & Lucy. She faces off against Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Summer Bishil (Towelhead), Melissa Leo (Frozen River) and Tarra Riggs (Ballast).
In the category of Best Actor Lead, Sean Penn scored a nod as gay activist Harvey Milk in the biopic Milk; Javier Bardem for Vicky Cristina Barcelona; Richard Jenkins for The Visitor; Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker; and Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler.

Madonna is doing her best to get through her split from husband Guy Ritchie – with a little help from ex-husband Sean Penn, according to a source close to the singer.
"It's a sad situation, but she's not heartbroken," says the source, who saw the 50-year-old icon hours before a London court granted the couple a preliminary "quickie divorce" on Friday. "She's handling it well."
Madonna, who rocked Philadelphia as part of her Sticky and Sweet tour on Thursday, is focusing on her work and her children to keep her mind off the end of her nearly eight-year marriage to Ritchie, says the source. "She's got a very busy life."Also helping her through the tough time is her ex-husband. The singer and Penn were spotted having drinks at the Greenwich Hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday night. "They have a nice rapport," says the source. "There's nothing romantic there. They're just good friends."

| DIEGO LUNA'S SON IS 'ONE THING THAT MATTERS' Blog |
For Diego Luna, becoming a dad has simplified his life.
"Well, it's just everything is easier now," the Mexican-born actor says of his 11-week-old baby boy, Jeronimo, Saturday while promoting his new drama, Milk, in Beverly Hills. "There is just one reason for you to be here. It's to make sure someone else is happy, and [he] has everything he needs. It's as simple as that."
Plus, Luna, 28, adds, Jeronimo is "the only guy who is not judging me now." In Milk, Luna's character Jack Lira falls in love with Sean Penn's 1970s gay rights champion Harvey Milk. A performance his wife, Camila Sodi enjoyed, Luna tells PEOPLE.
"She laughed a lot about it," he says, adding that Camila has been spending time at home, "taking care of the baby."
"I'm here just talking about a film – it's just a film – everything now is just what it is," he says. "It can't be so important. Now, there's just one thing that really matters. It's a different kind of love that you didn't know existed. It makes everything easier really."

Sean Penn took a subtle swipe at former wife Madonna – suggesting that her latest soon-to-be ex, movie director Guy Ritchie, might enjoy a career resurgence after their split.
"What's my 'British' thing to say?" mused Penn, 48, while accepting BAFTA/LA's Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film at Thursday's Britannia Awards ceremony in Century City. "Guy Ritchie is back!"
Penn's jab, which prompted a delayed-reaction roar of laughter and applause from the largely English audience, came on the heels of another Madonna-based punchline from director Paul Thomas Anderson, who presented his friend with the award. Following a compilation of clips from Penn's distinguished acting and directing career – he is about to star in the biopic Milk – Anderson noted, "They never show Shanghai Surprise," a reference to the notorious 1986 flop starring the then-married Penn and Madonna. (The two were married from 1985 to 1989.)
Anderson's zinger sent Penn into a fit of giggles.
"But Dead Man Walking makes up for it," insisted Anderson.
Making Fun of PennAnderson further roasted his friend by outlining the vast difference between Penn and the award namesake Kubrick – and no one laughed harder than Penn.
"Stanley Kubrick was a perfectionist and a man of amazing intellect. Sean's not really either one of those things," snapped Anderson. "Stanley Kubrick was a photographer in the beginning of his career. Sean has done considerable damage to photographers' cameras in the beginning of his career. Stanley Kubrick made Spartacus. Sean Penn spent 32 days in L.A. County Jail."
Accepting his award, Penn said he wished to tell Kubrick "to go to sleep, because I don't want him to turn anymore in his grave."

Julia Roberts - who turns 41 today - celebrated Monday night with a star-studded dinner in San Francisco.
The actress - who also performed a reading of The World Of Nick Adams as a tribute to the late Paul Newman that night - joined husband Danny Moder and pals Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn and Billy Crystal at celeb chef Traci Des Jardins' Jardiniere restaurant.
Diners inside heard the group sing "Happy Birthday" to Roberts and Wilson (who turned 52 on Oct. 26), a source tells Usmagazine.com.

Roberts tells Extra her latest milestone has put her career in perspective.
Asked about plans for a Pretty Woman sequel, she joked, "No one wants to see an old hooker, do they?"

during the opening night of Chicago Fashion Focus, an event that Wentz
hosted.
• Lauren Conrad and Kyle Howard, making
their weekly pilgrimage to jazz night at Teddy's inside the Hollywood
Roosevelt Hotel. The Hills star pulled Howard and another friend
in a line, hand-in-hand, toward the bathroom before returning to the bar.
According to a source, the two disappeared for some time, returning only
to close their tab. As they paid, Howard grabbed a cherry from a cup on the
bar, and Conrad stole an olive. Meanwhile, the two never stopped smiling at
each other – and Howard had his hand on her shoulder.
• Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn, looking very
much in love at New York's 21 Club after the Manhattan premiere of their new
Hollywood satire, What Just Happened. "They were very tender
toward each other," says one partygoer. "They were holding hands. They
seemed really happy."

| JULIA ROBERTS TO HONOR PAUL NEWMAN AT BENEFIT Blog |
Julia Roberts, Sean Penn and Tom Hanks are taking the stage to honor the charity work of late actor Paul Newman.
The A-listers -- along with Jack Nicholson, Bruce Willis, Danny Devito, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Billy Crystal and Danny Glover -- will perform a staged reading of The World of Nick Adams, an adaptation of a number of Ernest Hemingway's stories by A.E. Hotchner, at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall on October 27.
Proceeds benefit the Painted Turtle, the sixth addition to Newman's Hole in the Wall camps for seriously ill children, in California.
There are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Collectively, the camps have aided more than 135,000 children.

Newman died Friday of cancer at age 83.
In a statement, Robert Forrester, vice-chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said: “Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.
"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one’s life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance."

Just because Dakota Fanning starred opposite top actors Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and Sean Penn, doesn't mean she's immune to teasing from her peers.
"I have been tormented about getting my permit by all of my friends because I'm the youngest," Fanning told PEOPLE at The Secret Life of Bees premiere at The Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. "They all have their permits or license and I'm like 'Yes, I too will get mine in a year. So don't talk to me about that anymore!' " Fanning, 14, said she will have to get her parents permission first before getting behind the wheel. "I think they won't let me drive right when I turn 15 – probably when I'm 15 and a half. They will see if I'm ready."
Looking very chic in a black Zac Posen dress and in high heels, the former child star has grown up and even shared her first romantic kiss as an adult with her Bees costar and new 90210 stud Tristan Wilds.
"I wasn't nervous because we shot it at the end of filming so we knew each other really well," Fanning admitted. "He's the sweetest person ever."
Fanning had her first on-screen kiss at the age of 7 as a young Reese Witherspoon in the film Sweet Home Alabama.

The stars have descended on Denver for the Democratic National Convention, which begins today.
Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles sang at a kickoff event at Red Rocks Amphitheater on the outskirts of the city Sunday night.
"Are you strong enough to be my man, or my president?" Crow sang of Barack Obama.
"What I'm hearing from Sen. Obama is a lot like what we heard from Robert Kennedy," Crow told the audience. "No matter what campaign ad we see or how it's spun, hope is important. It's what this country was based on."
The singer also told the Associated Press that John McCain's criticism of Obama as a celebrity is just "a campaign ploy.
"I don't see him hanging out," she said. "I have yet to see him at any celebrity events."

Also, former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson has been tapped to sing the National Anthem Thursday night at Obama's request.

| SEAN PENN SELLING HOME FOR $15 MILLION Blog |
Sean Penn and his wife Robin Wright Penn are unloading their five-bedroom, Spanish-style estate in Ross, Calif., in Marin County. Price tag: $15 million.
Running on 2.2 acres, the 10,000-square-foot pad — which they bought in 1996 and spent more than two years remodeling — features a gym, home office, au pair suite and three-car garage, according to the Associated Press.
Also on the property: A two-bedroom guest cottage, complete with a two-car garage, pool, tennis court and redwood grove.
The couple — who have two children — wed in 1996.
They filed for divorce in December but had proceedings dismissed in April.
Penn will return to the big screen in December's Milk as Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay elected official who was assassinated in 1978.

Penn plays Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay elected official, a San Francisco city supervisor who was assassinated in 1978. Franco plays Scott Smith, one of his boyfriends.
“It wasn’t twelve hours, but it certainly felt like it," Franco tells September's GQ of the lip-lock. "The first kiss of the movie was out on Haight Street, with, like, 200 people watching, outside.
"It was a crane shot — I’m sure in the end it will be a really cool shot, but it starts close and then it takes maybe a minute," he says. "That’s a long time on film with everybody watching and, like, a fake mustache getting in your mouth."
Referring to Penn's character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Franco jokes the kiss "was long enough that you couldn’t help thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I’m kissing Spicoli.’”

| JOSH BROLIN REFERS TO HIS 'BAD PREDICAMENT' Blog |
On the heels of his arrest, Josh Brolin stepped out for the premiere of Frozen River Tuesday, but avoided reporters and politely declined to pose for photographs.
"Sorry, I'm kind of in a bad predicament right now!" Brolin, 40, told photographers with a smile, after he arrived at the West Hollywood event with his two children minutes before the movie started.
He attended the premiere to support the film's star, Melissa Leo, a longtime friend and a costar in a TV show they did together.
On Saturday, Brolin also was spotted with Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn and director Oliver Stone at Locanda Portofino in Santa Monica. An observer said Brolin appeared to be in a good mood, dancing a jig outside the restaurant and giving Penn a bear hug. The group also posed for pictures with the restaurant valet men and joked with fellow diners.Brolin was arrested on July 12 along with fellow actor Jeffrey Wright and five others in connection with a bar fight in Shreveport, La., where they'd been filming W, which Stone is directing.

| JOSH BROLIN "IN A BAD PREDICAMENT RIGHT NOW" Blog |
Josh Brolin made his first public appearance since his July 12 arrest on Tuesday.
Sans wife Diane Lane, he walked the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Frozen River with his son, Trevor, and daughter, Eden.
He declined to talk to press.
“[I’m] sorry. I’m kind of in a bad predicament right now,” he told reporters before walking off.
Police arrested Brolin, 40 — who is currently shooting the George Bush biopic W — and his co-star Jeffrey Wright, along with four crew members, after they impeded police officers who attempted to break up a bar brawl in Shreveport, Louisiana, July 12. (They were each charged with one misdemeanor count of interfering with police.)

According to local reports, a taser was used on Wright, 42, and both he and Brolin were hit with pepper spray when they wouldn't quit holding onto each other.
Video footage from a cell phone allegedly exists of the incident, but a police spokesperson denies it.
The Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has also dismissed any unfounded rumors.
After watching and listening to six to seven hours of police dashboard cameras and uniform microphones, the Mayor said police "conducted themselves in a manner that is, without question, beyond reproach," according to The Shreveport Times.
Meanwhile, TMZ.com posted a bizarre video of Brolin giving Robin Wright Penn a very friendly hug and kiss outside a Santa Monica bar (Sean Penn is also seen pushing Brolin in the footage).
But a pal tells New York's Daily News that the tape merely shows "close friends being playful with each other."
