JULIA ROBERTS AMONG THE STARS FOR PAUL NEWMAN'S CHARITY FUNDRAISER Blog
Julia Roberts, Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Redford, Bill Clinton, Harry Connick Jr. and Kristin Chenoweth helped deliver some serious star power to Monday's Lincoln Center gala in New York on behalf of Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Camps and honor the beloved, late founder of the charity benefiting children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Among what they had to say about Newman, who died last year, was:
"We've done a lot of these galas," Julia Roberts said, after doing a dancing kick line with kids who have attended the camps. "And I've never stood up without my buddy Paul Newman. It seems so much easier to sing and dance and make a fool of yourself when he's right next to you. He encourages fun, more than any person I've ever met. "
"I went up to the camp and Paul had me eat my first oyster," Jerry Seinfeld said during a sidesplitting stand-up routine. "I had never had an oyster in my life. And he convinced me to eat one. And it was horrible and it was exciting. And I thought, this will be gross and I'll have a story: I had my first oyster with Paul Newman." Former President Bill Clinton remembered meeting Newman as a "penniless law student" and then recalled his first visit to the first Hole in the Wall Camp in Connecticut as a "penniless governor" of Arkansas. "I have watched it since then," he said, "expand to "Florida, Ireland – which really touched my heart – France, and soon the Middle East." In fact, there are now camps, available to eligible children free of charge, in all 50 states and in 39 countries around the world, says the organization's Web site.
Harry Connick Jr., who performed "a little New Orleans Boogie Woogie" in Newman's honor, recalled once getting a voicemail from Newman that "changed my whole thing with my wife. I became more eloquent. He was the only guy who could really make you, as a man, feel like total crap. Feel like white trash," Connick Jr. joked, referring to Newman's accomplishments onscreen as well as with his substantial charity work.
Introducing the event on behalf of Newman's wife Joanne Woodward, Robert Redford, Newman's costar in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, said that "with success comes the pleasure to follow your passion. And Paul had many. Joanne, the girls, the whole family, racing, and salad dressing. I couldn't believe that when I first heard it."

JONAS BROTHERS' SEX LIVES REVEALED BY ... MOM! Blog
They're usually tight-lipped on relationships and girlfriends but the Jonas Brothers aren't so private anymore. And it's all thanks to Mom.
In an interview with Good Housekeeping", Denise Jonas talks about raising the trio, their fame – and, yes, the fact that they will have sex someday.
"They are men. They have desires. They have testosterone," she says. "If they make a mistake, I'm not going to hate them." "I don’t think they are above or below being seduced," she adds. "I would be foolish if I thought that. They are tested and tested, like every one of us. I pray for them."
Purity RingsAs for the purity rings Kevin, 21, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16, all wear, Denise says it was a private decision that's gotten some unwanted attention.
"They've been criticized for proclaiming things they never proclaimed," she says. "And what's the criticism? They don't want to go out there giving everyone an STD? What's so terrible about that?"
"I try to guide them with their choices," she says, adding that she's not making those choices. "They have been hurt in relationships by girls. But it's just about growing up and learning what it means to be in a relationship."
So how do you snag a Jonas Brothers? The answer, according to Joe Jonas, is simple.
"People always ask, 'What's a girl have to do to get your attention?'" says the 19-year-old. "She has to be good to Mom."

MILEY HITS THE ROAD WITH HER BIG BROTHER Blog
Miley Cyrus is making her fall tour a family affair: The teen pop star announced today that her big brother, Trace, will join her on road with his synth-pop band Metro Station as her opening act.
Starting on Sept. 14, the Cyrus clan will criss-cross their way through North America until December. Just don't expect any sibling rivalry on the tour bus from these two performers, who both have nothing but admiration for one another.
"Having my big brother open for me is a dream come true!!!!" the 16-year-old star said on Twitter today. She then posted on Trace's Twitter site that they're "gonna have the DOPEST TOUR OF ALL HISTORY!!!!!" "Me and Miley have been so close since I was a kid," Trace, 20, told PEOPLE last year. "Every time I watch her perform it blows me away. She thinks I'm one of the coolest brothers she can have because I have tattoos and I'm in a band but I don't think she realizes that I have like the coolest sister in the world."

ANGELS AND DEMONS: WHAT'S FACT – OR FICTION? Blog
Just as he blended fact and fiction in his earlier, controversial book-to-film, The Da Vinci Code, so does novelist Dan Brown concoct a sometimes confusing plot for Angels and Demons, the past weekend's No. 1 movie.
This time, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is in Rome to prevent the Vatican from being destroyed by an "antimatter" bomb and rescue four kidnapped Cardinals from the evil clutches of an ancient, underground society known as the Illuminati. The Illumi-whaaaa, you ask? Ex-actly.
And here are some other questions – and answers – that may arise after seeing the movie:
Who are the Illuminati? Is this secret society real? "Yes, it is," says Brown, on his Web site. The Order of the Illuminati was established on May 1, 1776 at the University of Ingolstadt in Germany. Its members were freethinkers, secularists, and intellectuals whose aim was "overthrowing the Roman Catholic and politically conservative Kingdom of Bavaria and replacing it with a liberal republic."
Is the illuminati logo used in the film historically real? Nope. It was created by real-life typographer-artist-philosopher John Langdon, a friend of Dan Brown's father and part of the inspiration for protagonist Robert Langdon. The author commissioned Langdon to create ambigrams, or typographical symbols that can be read in a variety of ways, for the word "Illuminati" as well as the "Illuminati diamond" – a fusion of the words "earth" "air" "fire" and "water" into a diamond shape.
Did Galileo and Bernini plot against the Vatican? It is a fact that Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher Galileo Galilei was persecuted by the 17th-century church for believing the world revolved around the sun. In the film, Brown suggests Galileo was a founding member of the Illuminati. Sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini's artwork populates Rome and the Vatican; in the film, he is portrayed as a high-ranking member of the Illuminati.
But were they really? Since Bernini died in 1680 and Galileo died in 1642, both lived at least a century too early to have joined the Illuminati.
Can antimatter blow up a city?Yes and no. According to physicists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, "When antimatter comes into contact with matter it annihilates: the mass of the particle and its antiparticle are converted into pure energy. Large-scale annihilation of antimatter and matter could theoretically be used in a destructive way. However, there is no way that antimatter could be created in sufficient quantities to be used in a bomb, nor could it be transported.
How is a Pope elected? The process of electing a pope has changed throughout the centuries. Today, according to Catholic-Pages.com: The Cardinals must take an oath that they will maintain absolute secrecy about the voting and deliberations – or face automatic excommunication. Their actual nominating and voting takes place during a ceremony in the Sistine Chapel, after which the ballots are burned and notes are taken. If a new Pope has been elected, the papers are burned with chemicals to give off white smoke. Otherwise, they give off black smoke, so that the waiting crowds, and the world, know if there is a new Holy Father. Since 2005, bells have been added, to erase any question as to the color of the smoke.
Is it possible to cheat at a papal conclave? In 1975 and in 1996, Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II changed the rules for conclaves to help protect the integrity of the voting, including specifics on how to fold the ballot, the threading of the ballot to make counting easier and procedures to "de-bug" the Sistine Chapel of hidden cameras or microphones.
Can you take an Angels and Demons tour in Rome? You've read the book, you've seen the film, now walk in Robert Langdon's shoes in a $610, 8-hour Angels and Demons Tour of Rome and see all the famous sites of the film – and a few others thrown in for good measure. Those with less time may opt for either the 4- or 6-hour tour.

AFTER THE THUNDER: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, PATTI SCIALFA SMOOCH ONSTAGE Blog
"May I bring out my lovely wife?" Bruce Springsteen asked the starry New York crowd honoring Tom Hanks at Monday night's Film Society of Lincoln Center Gala Tribute to the double Oscar winner. The Boss then took command, smooching Patti Scialfa on the lips as she slowly entered the stage to cheers from the audience.
Springsteen and Scialfa – his E-Street bandmate and wife of nearly 18 years – have had a rough ride in recent weeks. Last Wednesday, Scialfa missed an E-Street Band concert in Boston after falling from her horse and bruising herself (though not breaking any bones). The previous week, a request to seal records in the divorce case that names Springsteen as a correspondent was denied by a New Jersey judge. (After being named in the divorce proceedings, Springsteen defended his marriage, saying he and Scialfa's "commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married.")Scialfa and Springsteen treated each other warmly on the Alice Tully Hall stage, playing a heartfelt rendition of Philadelphia – the Oscar-winning title song to the 1993 film that won Hanks his first Best Actor Academy Award. The Boss then gingerly shepherded Scialfa, who appeared to be moving slower than usual, with a hand on her back as she left they left the stage together.
Toward the end of the tribute, Hanks also showed his love for Scialfa, when he recalled listening to his friend Patti "curled up on a couch with that guitar singing 'City Boy': 'There ain't nothin' in the world like a city boy …' "
Hanks claimed that her interest in city boys would inspire any male to "move to the big city."

JULIA ROBERTS DROPS THE F-BOMB ON TOM HANKS Blog
The night was billed as a salute to Tom Hanks, but it was Julia Roberts who stole the show.
"It's late, and I'm paying my babysitter overtime, and I have to pee," a harried Roberts announced at Monday's 36th annual Film Society of Lincoln Center Gala Tribute, where the Philadelphia and Forrest Gump double Oscar winner was presented the new Chaplin Award. Keeping her tribute as brief as possible, Roberts told Hanks, "So, everybody f---ing likes you."
Assessing his 2004 movie The Terminal, in which he played an Eastern European trapped in Immigration at J.F.K., Roberts said, "That movie about you and the airport and the accent was a pass for me. Airport? Were you just an immigrant lost? I didn't know. I love you, but I didn’t know … and I'm wearing the same f---ing dress tonight as your publicist." For the record, it was a cream dress by Dolce & Gabbana.
Came his time at the podium, Hanks told the black-tie crowd that Roberts has so much clout that the big story of the evening would be: "Julia Roberts wears same dress as publicist." He also said the Erin Brockovich Oscar winner has "the biggest potty mouth you have ever heard."
The Boss and WifeFor stargazers, the night was a dream come true, with many famous friends and colleagues roasting Hanks: The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons director Ron Howard, Castaway and Gump director Robert Zemeckis, Saving Private Ryan director Steven Spielberg, Charlie Wilson's War director Mike Nichols, Gump costar (she played his mom) Sally Field, Charlize Theron (who has often said in interviews that Hanks was her first onscreen crush) – and Philadelphia Best Song Oscar winner Bruce Springsteen, who sang accompanied by his wife, Patti Scialfa, whom he bussed onstage.
Springsteen also quipped that he and Hanks had met in the men's room of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where they apparently were "comparing the size of our Oscars."
"If you measure them," said Springsteen, "some are a little bigger. He has two."

Listen, I had lunch today with Rita [Wilson, Hanks' wife], and her t--s were here [motioned high] and her waist was here [motioned small] and her a-- was like that [motioned high], so what can I tell you that's new? | AUTHOR TO REVIVE DA VINCI CODE HERO IN NEW BOOK Blog |
As long promised, The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown is putting his hero, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, back to work. Random House will release 5 million copies of Langdon's latest adventure, to be titled The Lost Symbol, on Sept. 15, reports the book-industry trade publication Publishers Weekly.
The plot covers half a day in the life of Langdon. "Weaving five years of research into the story's 12-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge," the notoriously reclusive Brown, 44, is quoted as saying in a statement. "Robert Langdon's life clearly moves a lot faster than mine." May 15 will see the movie premiere of the Da Vinci prequel, Angels and Demons, based on Brown's 2000 novel of the same name. Like the 2006 Da Vinci Code movie, which was based on Brown's best-selling 2003 novel, this new film is directed by Ron Howard and stars Tom Hanks.
And fans, fear not: Variety reports that Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the first two screen adaptations of Brown's novels, is also gearing up to produce The Lost Symbol.

JULIA ROBERTS WANTS TO PLAN PLAY DATE WITH HER KIDS, OBAMA GIRLS Blog
Julia Roberts wouldn't mind getting her three kids together with Malia and Sasha Obama.
When asked by Allure magazine about her dream dinner party, the Oscar winner says: "For sure, we're going to start with the Obamas. The girls can play with my kids."
See photos of kids in the White House!
Also on her list: Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Tina Fey, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Diane Sawyer and her husband Mike Nichols.
Roberts says she'd cook "a big chicken tagine with figs and apricots" herself.
The 41-year-old also opens up about staying gorgeous at her age.
"The key to beauty is always to be looking at someone who loves you, really," she said. The actress wed cameraman Danny Moder, whom she met on the set of The Mexican, in 2002.

She's back to work in thriller Duplicity (out this March) after taking a few years off to raise twins Hazel and Finn, 4, and Henry, 2.

TOM HANKS APOLOGIZES FOR CALLING MORMON SUPPORT OF PROP 8 'UN-AMERICAN' Blog
Tom Hanks is rethinking his comments about Mormons who supported Proposition 8.
Last week, the star, who is an executive producer for HBO's controversial series Big Love about a group of polygamist Mormons, spoke out about the religious group's involvement in passing the California law, which bans same-sex marriage.
"The truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen," Hanks said at the show's premiere in Los Angeles last Wednesday. "There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them."
A spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kim Farah, took offense at Hanks's comments, telling FOX News, "Expressing an opinion in a free and democratic society is as American as it gets."
Now, in a exclusive statement to PEOPLE through his representative Leslee Dart, Hanks is softening his stance.Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California's Proposition 8 as "un-American." I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination. But everyone has a right to vote their conscience – nothing could be more American. To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are "un-American" creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use "un- American" lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have. Sincerely, Tom Hanks.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT: THE D.C. EDITION! Blog
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, ordering practically everything on the menu during their family style meal at the Blue Duck Tavern inside Washington, D.C.'s Park Hyatt. Country's first couple dined with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, among other guests, and they started their meal with a plate of sliced meat. "The servers put everything in the middle of the table, and they devoured it," a source tells us. After the steak dinner, Hanks made sure to stop by the restaurant's open kitchen and give his compliments to the chef. Says the source: "Everyone was having such a great time; they were very upbeat."
Also at Blue Duck Tavern that night: Ben Affleck, who shared dinner and wine with Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David. They ordered scallops, steak and sides of oven-roasted bone marrow with the restaurant's signature apple pie for dessert.
Sheryl Crow, getting topical and performing her hit "A Change Would Do You Good" during the "Hey, America Feels Kinda Cool Again" concert at the 9:30 Club. The singer didn't shy away from politics during her set, hinting at her frustration with the Bush administration. "I'm gonna sing a song called 'Can't Cry Anymore' because that's how I feel," she told the crowd. "I've been crying now for eight years," she said, "but now I'm so happy, I could scream!" Later, headliners the Beastie Boys performed a raucous hour-long set of hits – and spent their performance counting down until the Inauguration.

OBAMA FAMILY FETED BY SHERYL CROW, BEYONCE AT INAUGURAL CONCERT! Blog
Nearly all of Hollywood turned up to the concert of the year -- in Washington, D.C.!
Barack and Michelle Obama smiled, danced and waved to their favorite stars at the inaugural kick-off concert, We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial
At 2:30 p.m., the Obamas and Bidens -- all sitting in a glass bulletproof section near the stage erected on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial -- had front-row seats to the star-studded show. Obama's two daughters, Malia and Sasha, sat between Barack and Michelle. Malia was busy taking photos with her digital camera. Five minutes later, everyone rose to sing the National Anthem.
Denzel Washington gave an introductory speech. Bruce Springsteen sang "The Rising" with a red-and-white-robed gospel choir behind him.
Then, actress Laura Linney spoke about former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King III read some of John F. Kennedy's famous words. Mary J. Blige then sang "Lean On Me." Obama beamed at her during the performance.
See the Obama family's best "Just Like Us" moments.
Steve Carell and Jamie Foxx took the stage next to speak to the swelling crowd.
Betty LaVette duetted with Jon Bon Jovi. Obama was bopping to the music, and Malia continued to take photos of the crowd. After the song, Tom Hanks, who as Forrest Gump famously gave a speech at the monument steps -- talked about Abraham Lincoln and said, "We cannot escape history." Next up was Marisa Tomei, who talked about how Americans are a family. The music picked up again when James Taylor, John Legend and Faith Hill performed a song together.
Vice President-elect Joe Biden gave a speech and said: "Anyone can make it if given a fair chance. Work isn't about money -- it's about dignity and respect." John Mellencamp sang "Ain't That America."
Queen Latifah spoke at 3:30 p.m. and said, "We're celebrating not just the Inauguration of a new president, but the journey of America continuing to be America." Josh Groban then sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee." After the patriotic number, George Lopez and Kal Penn -- who had the crowd screaming out "Kumar!" -- spoke. Lopez ad-libbed part of his speech and called out: "Anyone here from out of town? Well, you're all home now!"
Then, will.i.am and Sheryl Crow sang Bob Marley's "One Love." When the song morphed into the Black Eyed Peas' "Where is the Love?," Michelle began dancing along in her seat and waving at the performers.
After that powerhouse performance, golf pro Tiger Woods gave a speech honoring men and women in uniform, and the US Naval Academy Glee Club perfomed. Garth Brooks followed them up by singing two songs -- "American Pie" and "Shout."

Samuel L. Jackson introduced U2, who sang "In the Name of Love." Frontman Bono congratulated Obama, who smiled back at the rocker.
When the concert was about to come to a close, Obama took the stage to thank everyone for coming and adressed the challenges ahead: "Anything is possible in America. What gives me the greatest hope is you."

BEYONCé, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN SING OUT AT OBAMA INAUGURAL CELEBRATION Blog
Barack Obama and his family had a star-studded – and musical – introduction to Washington, D.C.
On Sunday afternoon, the President-elect was feted on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration. The two-hour event was broadcast live on an open signal on HBO, and it featured a mix of historical speeches, presented by stars like Tom Hanks, and classic anthems like U2's surging Martin Luther King, Jr.-inspired "Pride (In the Name of Love)."
Equally powerful, Beyoncé closed out the festivities with a stately, soaring version of "America the Beautiful." The singer beckoned all the earlier performers on stage, leading a star-studded sing-along. Said Beyoncé as she concluded, "America, we are one." Obama as InspirationDenzel Washington kicked the festivities off with an introduction, telling the crowd, "We are inspired by the man we've elected to be the 44th president." Then, the actor ceded the stage to Bruce Springsteen and a full gospel choir in red robes. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, the troubadour performed "The Rising" – and delivered a message of unity. "Come on up for the rising," he sang. "Come on up, lay your hands in mine."
As he performed, the cameras panned to the awe-inspiring sight of thousands of spectators huddled in the cold, packed around the Reflecting Pool and stretched all the way east to the Washington Monument.
Much closer to the action, Obama and his family – including wife Michelle and their daughters Malia, 10, who snapped photos of the massive crowd, and Sasha, 7 – took in the festivities from a front-row perch, in a box just off the stage, next to Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.
Obama also took the stage to thank performers and audience members for sharing in the celebration. "Welcome to Washington, and welcome to this celebration of American renewal," he said. "As I stand here tonight, what gives me the greatest hope . . . is you: Americans of every race and region and station who came here because you believe in what this country can be and because you want to help us get there."
Dancing & LaughterMary J. Blige got concert-goers dancing – even Obama, who grooved in his seat – during her soulful version of "Lean on Me." And Jamie Foxx inspired plenty of laughter – including a chuckling Obama – with his pitch-perfect impression of the President-elect as he recited lines from Obama's post-election victory speech in Chicago's Grant Park.

TOM HANKS PAYS TRIBUTE TO PAUL NEWMAN Blog
Tom Hanks released a statement Tuesday remembering his Road to Perdition costar Paul Newman, who died at age 83:
"Paul Newman told me his hotel in Chicago was a room at the YMCA, which was not hard to imagine. He considered himself just another member of the acting company, who would call his wife during breaks and confess to feeling self-conscious on the first day of shooting. But he was Paul Newman, and could not mask the fact he was simply – yet elegantly – an extraordinary artist and man. How lucky we all have been."

JULIA ROBERTS TO HONOR PAUL NEWMAN AT BENEFIT Blog
Julia Roberts, Sean Penn and Tom Hanks are taking the stage to honor the charity work of late actor Paul Newman.
The A-listers -- along with Jack Nicholson, Bruce Willis, Danny Devito, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Billy Crystal and Danny Glover -- will perform a staged reading of The World of Nick Adams, an adaptation of a number of Ernest Hemingway's stories by A.E. Hotchner, at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall on October 27.
Proceeds benefit the Painted Turtle, the sixth addition to Newman's Hole in the Wall camps for seriously ill children, in California.
There are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Collectively, the camps have aided more than 135,000 children.
See Us' photo tribute to Newman and other stars who have passed.
Newman died Friday of cancer at age 83.
In a statement, Robert Forrester, vice-chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said: “Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.
"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one’s life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance."
